Dilfer does just enough
By ROB LONGLEY -- Toronto Sun
TAMPA -- He hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy and pointed to the sky like every Super Bowl-winning quarterback before him.
There will be a gaudy, diamond-encrusted ring as a souvenir and, for the fans, eternal replays of his one brilliant touchdown pass.
Let history show, however, that the Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV in spite of Trent Dilfer.
"It wasn't pretty," Dilfer said following the Ravens' 34-7 win last night over the New York Giants. "If I was a fan I wouldn't like it as much as watching (last year's offensive-minded champion St. Louis Rams.)
"But they should make a movie about this football team and show it to every little-league team. This is a team that decided wins were more important than stats."
When you compete 12 of 25 passes for 153 yards, with misses to receivers as wide open as the Tampa Bay, there may be a need for rationalization.
The game barely was over and Ravens defensive tackle Tony Siragusa had an announcement which best be ignored for more than one reason.
"All the people who didn't think Trent Dilfer could lead us to a Super Bowl, they can kiss my (butt)" the 340-pounder said.
Tempting as Siragusa's offer was, the best that can be said about Dilfer's role was that he didn't lead his team to a loss. And in light of the shoddy four interceptions by Giants counterpart Kerry Collins, perhaps that was enough.
Dilfer also can take with him the personal satisfaction of winning in a town that gave up on him. A year ago this week, he was run out of town, released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And his one touchdown pass, a perfect 38-yard strike to Brandon Stokley, was the lone offensive highlight of a night built on defence.
"I didn't throw the ball well during the first half, but I did hit the one we needed," Dilfer said.
A Super Bowl win may not be enough to retain his job, however.
The Ravens signed Dilfer to a one-year contract during the off-season, but when starter Tony Banks struggled early in the season, Dilfer was given the first-string assignment and told not to be spectacular but not stupid either.
Even with last night's win, there are rumblings the Ravens will chase a free-agent quarterback during the off-season.
