#Event Description & Format - Tennis#
-------------------------------------
Tennis will be making its fifth consecutive appearance as a
full-medal sport in the Olympics and will feature some of the
biggest names in the sport.
Tennis, which made its Olympic debut in 1896 with the men's
singles and doubles competitions, was dropped in 1924, a victim
of a dispute between amateurs and professionals. It was brought
back as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 before being
re-admitted in 1988 in Seoul, Korea.
The singles draw for both men's and women's will be comprised of
64 players each, with no more than three players from any one
country competing in each draw.
Men's matches are best-of-five sets, while women's matches are
best-of-three sets.
The doubles competition - men and women - will be made up of
32 teams, with no more than one team from any one country.
The tennis competition runs from August 15-22 at the
Olympic Tennis Centre.
