2004 SUMMER OLYMPICS NOTE
#Event Description & Format - Rowing#
-------------------------------------

Rowing, which has been held in all but one Olympics, will take
place August 14-22 at the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing
Center.

The men will compete in eight events -- pair oars without
coxswain, four oars without coxswain, eight oars with coxswain,
single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, lightweight
double sculls and lightweight fours without coxswain.

The women will race in the same events, excluding four oars
without coxswain and lightweight fours without coxswain.

In sculling events, each rower pulls two oars, while in other
events, they pull one oar. A coxswain -- weighing at least 121
pounds for men and 110 for women -- calls the strokes.

Lightweight competitions, being held for the third time,
feature male athletes that weigh no more than 160 pounds and
female athletes that weigh no more than 130.

Since 1964, the competition has begun with qualifying heats. The
fastest qualifiers advance to the semifinals while the rest
take part in a repechage or second-chance round with the four
fastest joining the semifinalists.

The six fastest semifinalists advance to the final and the rest
of the field will compete in a "petit-final" to determine seventh
through 12th places.
