QB Sage Rosenfels started and is slated to play most of the
first half in the Redskins' preseason opener in Japan.  
Danny Wuerffel, a former player under coach Steve Spurrier
at Florida, will play the second half. ... It was the 
second time the Redskins participated in an American Bowl
game, the first a 17-15 loss to the 49ers in London in 
1992. ... The Redskins signed DT Daryl Gardener after he
was released by Miami.  Gardener will likely rotate at the
defensive tackle positions with Dan Wilkinson and Santana
Dotson, who is currently on the physically-unable-to-perform
list. ... David Loverne, Rod Jones, Ross Tucker and Alex
Sulfsted are the four players competing for the starting
guard spots.
