  • NEW YORK JETS TEAM REPORT

    Tuesday, August 6, 7:47 PM
2001 Record: 10-6, AFC Wild Card

    Coach: Herman Edwards (2nd year)

    Preseason Schedule:
Thu, Aug. 8 -- at Pittsburgh
Thu, Aug. 15 -- at Baltimore
Sat, Aug. 24 -- host NY Giants
Fri, Aug, 30 -- host Philadelphia

DE John Abraham, who had 13 of the team's 33 sacks last year,
will be sidelined four to six weeks with a sprained left knee.
Abraham suffered the injury in practice on Saturday and
underwent an MRI on Monday morning. Abraham will miss the
entire preseason, but the Jets are hopeful their top pass
rusher will be back for the season opener September 8 at
Buffalo. Free agent signee Steve White, a six-year veteran,
will start at right end in Abraham's absence. He had career
highs with 44 tackles and five sacks last season for Tampa Bay.
Bryan Thomas, the team's first-round pick in the 2002 draft, may
also be used as a speed rusher on the right side in third-down
situations or nickel defense. ... J.P. Machado and rookie
Jonathan Goodwin, a fifth-round pick, will battle for the
starting left guard spot, which was supposed to go to Dave
Szott, who will be sidelined until at least November.
