    (MICHIGAN-ST JOHNS)

    Monday, December 4, 3:11 AM
    (ADDING INFORMATION)

    (21) ST JOHNS 97, MICHIGAN 83
    -----------------------------

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Consolation was what St. John's was
looking for, and for a while it didn't look like the Red Storm
    would get it.

After an ugly loss Saturday, the 21st-ranked Red Storm fell
behind by double digits in the first half before regrouping for
a 97-83 victory over Michigan in a meeting of first-round losers
    in the BB&T Classic.

Anthony Glover scored 27 points and grabbed five rebounds to
lead the Red Storm (4-2), who rebounded from an 85-75 loss to
George Washington that featured several ugly fouls and saw St.
John's shoot 38 percent from the field.

Bernard Robinson Jr. and Lavell Blanchard had 18 points apiece
for Michigan (2-4), which opened the tournament with an 82-51
loss to No. 14 Maryland but hardly looked like a team that
should have challenged St. John's. The Wolverines, who lost
their third straight game, have six underclassmen on their
    roster.

St. John's improved to 4-1 lifetime against Michigan, but had
lost the previous meeting, dropping a 76-61 decision on December
    11, 1996.

Freshman Omar Cook contributed 20 points and eight assists while
Willie Shaw -- another first-year student -- scored 19 points
and Reggie Jessie had 19 and nine rebounds for the Red Storm,
who shot 53 percent (33-for-62) from the field, including
    7-of-14 from 3-point range.

Avery Queen collected 14 points and Josh Asselin and Josh Moore
each chipped in eight for the Wolverines, who made 44 percent
(24-for-55) of their shots -- connecting on 7-of-14 (50 percent)
    from beyond the arc.
