    Revolution hires Clavijo

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Fernando Clavijo, assistant coach of the worst team in MLS, was hired Monday as coach of the New England Revolution, who have made the playoffs only once in the league's four years.

Clavijo moved from the New York-New Jersey MetroStars to become the fifth coach in Revolution history. The MetroStars finished this season with a 7-25-3 record.

"I have been a winner most of my life," Clavijo said. "I'm not willing to give that up yet."

Clavijo, a member of the 1994 U.S. World Cup team, succeeds interim coach Steve Nicol, who took over after Walter Zenga was fired Oct. 1 with two games left in the regular season.

Zenga became coach late in the 1998 season after Thomas Rongen was dismissed. Rongen coached the Revolution to the 1997 playoffs. He came to New England as the replacement for its first coach, Frank Stapleton.

Before joining MLS last season, Clavijo coached the Florida Thundercats of the National Professional Soccer League.
