    Matthaeus may join MetroStars later

MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- Lothar Matthaeus said Saturday that he might delay leaving Bayern Munich and join the New York-New Jersey MetroStars of the MLS later than expected.

The 38-year-old German player, expected to be the American team's new star, was originally scheduled to depart Munich in December and join his American team on Feb. 20.

Matthaeus, however, told the Bild daily that because Munich lost two key players last week he would like to join the MetroStars after March 8. That's when the German club plays a key Champions Cup match against Real Madrid.

"I offered this to Munich because of its problems with players. Now it's up to the two clubs, first of all the MetroStars, to work it out," Matthaeus said.

Munich lost both the candidates to replace Matthaeus as the team's defensive stopper.

Jens Jeremies was suspended for five Champions Cup matches for a brutal foul and Thomas Strunz will undergo a knee operation next week.

Matthaeus said the disadvantage of joining the MetroStars late is he won't know his new teammates, but the advantage is he will appear in top condition.

"According to my contract with the MetroStars, I'm not allowed to stay in Munich. But on the other hand, my connection to FC Bayern is so strong that I'm ready to help," Matthaeus.

Matthaeus will tie retired Swedish goalie Thomas Ravelli's international record of 143 caps for a national team if he plays Sunday for Germany in a friendly against Norway, as expected.
