Tuesday, September 4, 2001Wedding bells for mat fansComing to grips with marriage
Lesley Smith stepped into a wrestling ring yesterday and got to keep the rock. The 23-year-old's boyfriend, Ken Pauze, 25, proposed in Nathan Phillips Square after promising yesterday morning to ask Smith to marry him if Toronto was chosen the host city for WrestleMania next March. "I'm a little overwhelmed," said Smith, who had talked marriage with Pauze, but believed their wedding was a couple of years away after buying a house together in Pickering this summer. 'NO CLUE' "I had no clue. I had no idea it was coming." Pauze, a wrestling fan since age six, planned the engagement for two weeks -- as confident in the WWF's choice of Toronto as the host city as he is in his own choice for a bride. "It just seemed like the right thing to do," said Pauze, who picked up the ring from the jeweller on Saturday. 'JUST GO NUTS' "The love he has for wrestling -- he and his friends get together and pretend they're wrestlers. They just go nuts," Smith said with a laugh. "It can get a bit embarrassing, but it's fun ... He's made me the fan I am today." Just hours after the proposal, the couple of 2 1/2 years tentatively set their wedding date -- next March 16, the day before Wrestlemania at the SkyDome. "That better not be my whole honeymoon," quipped Smith. "We'll have to wait and see what happens," Smith said. More on Wrestlemania XVIII
