Mayor Mel cleared in WMXVIII conflict-of-interest

By ZEN RURYK -- City Hall Bureau

Mayor Mel Lastman was within conflict-of-interest rules when he promoted Wrestlemania XVIII in Toronto.

A letter of inquiry from Councillor Michael Walker called for Lastman to respond to council about a conflict-of-interest allegation in hyping the wrestling spectacle. Walker took issue with the mayor because Lastman's son, Blayne, used World Wrestling Federation stars in advertisements for Bad Boy furniture stores.

Lastman wrote a one-word response Tuesday to the suggestion he had a conflict: "No."

Walker said he concluded after a review of provincial conflict-of-interest legislation that while Lastman's behaviour "skates the line," he didn't break any rules.
