SLAM! Wrestling International -- 2000: The Year-In-Review Mexico


What a year for Mexico!

With all the groundbreaking developments and historic events that took place in 2000, Mexican wrestling and Lucha Libre may ever be the same for a long time.

From the death of Blue Demon, to the unmasking of Villano III and Fishman to AAA and EMLL forming a brief partnership, a lot of hot action took place in Mexico in 2000.

Find out what happened this year in Mexico with this complete timeline, chronicling the news and events that drew headlines south of the equator.

JANUARY

1 - Pimpinela Escarlata, for years the top drawing heel in the world, makes his EMLL debut in Mexico City.

2 - Grupo Revolucion hold a one-night tournament to crown the first IWRG Tag team champions in Naucalpan.

MASANORI SAITO 9 - Black Dragon wins the IWRG Middleweight title from Ultimo Vampiro in Naucalpan.

13 - A statue of the legendary El Santo is unveiled in his hometown of Tulancingo.

16 - Grupo Revolucion prelim wrestler Multifacetico is shot and killed by gang members in a Mexico City suburb... Midget wrestler Pequeno Peluchin is murdered in Juarez after thugs tried to rob him on his way home from the matches.

19 - Former Mexican National Heavyweight champion Raul Reyes passes away at the age of 60. Reyes was a main-eventer in Mexico in the 60s and 70s.

20 - A riot breaks out an EMLL show in Cuernavaca as drunken fans throw bottles and chairs. Two bottles hit El Satanico and Tarzan Boy, the wrestlers scheduled in the main event.

23 - CMLL Heavyweight champion Universo Dos Mil defeats WWO Heavyweight champ Mascara Sagrada in Mexico City.

30 - La Parka Jr. beats The Panther in a hair vs. hair match on an AAA card in Monterrey.... In EMLL, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. defeats Gran Markus Jr. in a mask vs. hair match in Guadalajara, forcing Markus to have his had shaved bald.

El Jurassico, a wrestler from Monterrey, passes away at the age of 40.

FEBRUARY

1 - EMLL hosts a one-night tag team tournament in Mexico City won by Blue Panther and Rencor Latino.

3 - Blue Panther defeats Nuevo Haracan Ramierez in a mask vs. mask match on an EMLL show in Cuernavaca... On a Grupo Revolucion show in Naucalpan, Rody Payaso loses his mask in battle royal inside a steel cage. The match stipulated that the last man remaining in the cage would lose his mask.

8 - Olimpico defeats Blue Panther in an absolute bloodbath of a match on an EMLL show in Mexico City.

11 - EMLL run their first show of the new millennium at Mexico City's Arena Mexico (considered the Madison Square Gardens of Mexican wrestling). Villano 3 defeats Atlantis in the main event.

13 - Cyborg Cop loses a mask vs. mask match to El Guardia on a Grupo Revolucion show... On an AAA show in Monterrey, Haytor beats Sergio Romo Jr. in a hair vs. hair match.

MASANORI SAITO 18 - Halloween retains his IWC Middleweight title against Lizmark Jr. in Tijuana... Perro Aguayo wrestles his last match for AAA in Puebla.

20 - AAA holds its annual Reina de Reinas (Queen of Queens) show in Morelia. Rossy Moreno defeats Xochitl Hamada in the tournament finals.

25 - After an eight-year absence, Perro Aguayo returns to EMLL, sitting ringside during a show at Arena Mexico. In the main event, Tarzan Boy beats El Satanico in a hair vs. hair match.

27 - Super Delfin defeats Olimpico in Nagoya, Japan to win the CMLL World Welterweight Title.

MARCH

3 - On an indy show in Tijuana, Rey Misterio Sr., Halloween and Damian defeated Psicosis (who now wrestles as Nicho el Millonario in Mexico), El Hijo del Santo and Brazo de Plata. During the match, Rey Misterio Jr. ran to ringside and handcuffed his uncle to the ropes.

5 - AAA's annual Rey de Reyes (King of Kings) show draws a sell-out crowd of 18 000 fans to the El Toreo de Quatro Caminos bullring in Naucalpan as La Parka Jr. defeated Drako II in a mask vs. mask match. In the finals of the King of Kings tournament, La Parka Jr. beat El Alebrije, Charly Manson and Cibernetico. Pentagon defeated Oriental, forcing Oriental's manager for the match, Rossy Moreno, to have her head shaved... La Parka defeats Pierroth Jr. in the main event of an EMLL show in Mexico City.

Fantasy & The Star Boy defeat Yasushi Kanda & Susumu Mochizuki in Naucalpan to win the IWRG Tag Team Titles

6 - Mexican legend Perro Aguayo had what was advertised as his last match in Japan (he was a regular on New Japan tours in the late 70s/early 80s) teaming with his son, Perro Aguayo Jr. & Dr Wagner Jr. to defeat Jushin "Thunder" Liger, Gran Hamada & Negro Casas in Tokyo.... Tarzan Boy defeats Black Warrior in Puebla to win the NWA light heavyweight title.

8 - Pirata Morgan retains his IWRG Heavyweight title against Dos Caras in Pantitlan.

10 - Perro Aguayo wrestles his first match in EMLL in eight years, teaming with Atlantis, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and Mr. Niebla to defeat Villano 3, Scorpio Jr., Bestia Salvaje and Shocker.

MASANORI SAITO 17 - EMLL holds their first pay-per-view event as Atlantis defeats Villano 3 in one of the biggest mask vs. mask matches in the history of Mexican wrestling.

Rey Misterio Sr. defeats Psicosis in a ladder match in Tijuana to win the IWC TV title.

19 - A TV taping held by AAA at an outdoor stadium in Xalapa is washed out by a heavy rainstorm. Amazingly, the show continues as fans sit in their seats instead of seeking shelter from the storm.

21 - Tony Rivera beat Mr. Mexico in a hair vs. hair match on an EMLL show in Mexico City.

29 - National Public Radio in the U.S. runs a story on Lucha Libre, talking about the health of the sport in Mexico.

31 - Oscar Sevilla defeats Gran Apache I in a hair vs. hair match on an AAA show in Ciudad Madero.

APRIL

7 - EMLL Trios champions Blue Panther, Black Warrior and Dr. Wagner Jr. retain their titles against Tarzan Boy, Negro Casas and Emilio Charles at Arena Mexico.

MASANORI SAITO 9 - AAA stars La Parka Jr. and Oriental do battle on the under card of Michinoku Pro's Super J Cup at Tokyo's Sumo Hall.

Villano 3 becomes a technico (babyface) turning on partners Shocker and Apolo Dantes during a match in Mexico City.

10 - Blue Panther captures the WWA Welterweight title from El Hijo del Santo in Monterrey.

14 - Perro Aguayo defeats Bestia Salvaje in a hair vs. hair match at Arena Mexico.

Rey Misterio Sr. defeats Psicosis in a dog collar match on an indy show in Tijuana.

17 - Zumbido beats Antifaz del Norte in Nuevo Laredo to win the NAWA middleweight title.

20 - Brazo de Plata Jr. makes his pro debut, teaming with Brazo de Plata (his father) and Brazo de Platino (his uncle) in Cuernavaca.

21 - Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero and Mr. Niebla win a one-night Carnaval Increible de Trios tournament (teams are comprised of heels and babyfaces teaming together) at Arena Mexico.

30 - Oscar Sevilla defeats Angel Mortal in a hair vs. hair match and Hector Garza defeats Sangre Chicana to win the Mexican National light heavyweight title at an AAA TV taping in Monterrey.

El Temerario is killed in auto accident in Villahermosa.

MAY

1 - Brazo de Oro defeats Valentin Mayo in a hair vs. hair match in Mexico City.

4- Bestia Negra III loses a mask match in Cuernevaca.

7 - La Parka Jr. and Electro Shock win the Mexican National tag titles from Haytor and Panther in Monterrey.

Villano 3, 4 & 5 capture the IWRG Trios belts on a Grupo Revolucion show in Naucalpan.

MASANORI SAITO 10 - ECW star Super Crazzy accompanies Dr. Wagner Jr. to the ring for his match against Villano 3 during an EMLL show in Acapulco.

11 - Dr. Cerebro wins the IWRG Intercontinental welterweight title from Ultimo Vampiro in Naucalpan.

12 - Psicosis defeats mentor Rey Misterio Sr. in a hair vs. hair match before 6000 fans in Tijuana. Konnan interfered in the third fall on behalf of Psicosis, helping him win the match.

14 - Super Calo debuts for Grupo Revolucion in Naucalpan, joining his younger brothers Alan Stone and Motocross.

19 - Los Boriquas steel Alushe, the long time ewok sidekick of Tinieblas, during the main event of an EMLL show at Arena Mexico.

Perro Aguayo Jr. defeats El Texano in a hair vs. hair match during an AAA TV taping in Tijuana.

21 - El Potro is the last man remaining in a caged battle royal in Monterrey and as a result is unmasked.

28 - El Hijo del Santo regains the WWA Welterweight title from Blue Panther in Monterrey.

30 - Ricky Marvin defeats El Fiero in a hair vs. hair match in Mexico City.

JUNE

2 - Los Vatos Locos, the top rudo clique in AAA, interfere during a match on an EMLL show at Arena Mexico, setting up an interpromotional show later in the month.

MASANORI SAITO 7 - Koji Kanemoto defeats EMLL's Dr. Wagner Jr. in a tournament match of New Japan's annual Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

9 - Alushe turns rudo at Arena Mexico, turning on Tinieblas, his partner of 20 years. AAA invades EMLL once again, as Los Vipers attack EMLL star Negro Casas during his match.

Psicosis turned back babyface, turning on partners Perro Aguayo and La Parka during a tag match in Tijuana against Rey Misterio Sr., Halloween and Damian.

15 - Bombero Infernal lost a three-way match against Dr. Cerebro and Ciclon Ramirez at a Grupo Revolucion TV Taping. As a result, Infernal had his head shaved.

17 - AAA and EMLL draw a crowd of 20 000 fans to the Plaza de Toros bullring in Mexico City for their historic joint show. The main event saw AAA's Octagon and La Parka Jr. team with EMLL stars Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and Brazo de Plata to defeat AAA's Cibernetico and La Parka Jr. and EMLL's Shocker and Pierroth Jr.

19 - Jerry Estrada defeats long-time rival Stuka in a hair vs. hair match in Nuevo Laredo.

22 - The brother trio of Super Calo, Alan Stone and Motocross win the Distrito Federal trios titles from Oficial, Guardian and Vigilante in Naucalpan.

23 - El Felino defeats Brazo de Plata in a mask vs. hair match in Tijuana, forcing Plata to have his head shaved.

EMLL strips El Hijo del Santo and Negro Casas of the CMLL World Tag team titles. Santo hadn't been competing in EMLL for several months. EMLL starts a three-week tournament to crown new champs.

29 - Ciclon Ramierez beats Dr. Cerebro in Naucalpan to win the IWRG welterweight title.

JULY

2 - Antifaz del Norte wins the NAWA welterweight title from Zumbido in Monterrey.

MASANORI SAITO 5 - AAA brings TripleMania to Japan as their annual series of shows kicks off at Korakuen Hall.

7 - Psicosis turns back babyface in Tijuana.

9 - On the last show of the TripleMania tour of Japan, La Parka Jr. and Electro Shock win the Mexican national tag team titles from Hector Garza and Perro Aguayo Jr.

14 - Former NWA World Champion Lou Thesz attends an EMLL show at Arena Mexico where company officials present him with a plaque in a special in-ring ceremony.

15 - Super Crazzy returns to AAA in Monterrey.

17 - Tarzan Boy beats El Satanico in a hair vs. hair match in Puebla for the second time this year.

La Parka beats Gran Markus Jr. in a mask vs. hair match in Monterrey.

23 - Sangre Azteca beats Pegasso in a mask vs. mask match on an EMLL show in Mexico City.

AUGUST

MASANORI SAITO 4 - EMLL's second pay-per-view sees Mascara Ano Dos Mil lose a four-way cage match against Perro Aguayo, Pierroth Jr. and Villano 3. As a result, Dos Mil had his head shaved. On the under card, Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero defeat Mr. Niebla & Villano 4 in the finals of a tournament to crown new CMLL Tag team champs.

10 - Arkangel de la Muerte defeats Super Delfin in Kawasaki, Japan to capture the CMLL World Welterweight Title.

11 - Gigante Silva returns to Mexico, teaming with Brazo de Plata and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. in a handicap match against Cien Caras, Apolo Dantes, Scorpio Jr. and Shocker at Arena Mexico.

13 - Sangre Chicana defeats Cobarde in a hair vs. hair match in Nuevo Laredo.

Dr. Cerebro defeats Ciclon Ramirez in Naucalpan to regain the IWRG Intercontinental Welterweight Title.

14 - Damian beats Pimpinela Escarlata in a hair vs. hair match in Nuevo Laredo.

18 - Cibernetico defeats Hector Garza to capture the IWC heavyweight title in Queretaro.

25 - GWAS, a new promotion featuring a mix of American and Mexican wrestlers, holds an event at Mexico City's Palacio de los Desportes. In the main event, Mascara Sagrada defeats Fishman in a mask vs. mask match. In the semi-main event, Tony Arce & Vulcano & Rocco Valente defeat Halcon Dorado Jr. & Andy Barrow & Conde Bartock in a triple hair vs. hair match. Originally taped to air on pay-per-view at a later date, the show is considered a gigantic flop both commercially (only 300 fans turn out to the outdoor stadium) and in terms of wrestling quality and instead airs on free TV.

31 - Masked legend Mil Mascaras, in an interview with the Japanese Gong Magazine, announces he will run for a spot in the Mexican Senate representing his home state of San Louis Potosi in the 2003 elections.

SEPTEMBER

1 - Rey Misterio Jr. teams with Mil Mascaras and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. to defeat his uncle Rey Misterio Sr., Fobia and Blue Panther in Tijuana. It's his first match in Mexico in several months.

3 - Sangre Chicana defeats Pirata Morgan in a hair vs. hair match at an AAA TV taping in Monterrey.

8 - Los Villanos win a one-night trios tournament put on by EMLL at Arena Mexico... Pirata Morgan and El Texano win the Mexican National Tag titles from Perro Aguayo Jr. and Hector Garza at an AAA TV taping in Tijuana.

15 - Los Hermanos Dinamitas defeat Los Boriquas in the main event of EMLL's 'World Cup' show at Arena Mexico.

17 - Antifaz del Norte defeats El Dandy in a mask vs. hair match in Monterrey.

MASANORI SAITO 22 - Dr. Wagner Jr. and Negro Casas battle to a no-contest in the finals of the Leyenda de Plata (Legend of the silver mask) tournament honouring the memory of El Santo.

29 - Negro Casas defeats Dr. Wagner Jr. in the main event of EMLL's 67th anniversary show at Arena Mexico.... Heavy Metal and Perro Aguayo Jr. defeat Latin Lover and Hector Garza in the main event of AAA's annual Verno de Escandalo (Summer Scandal) spectacular... At an indy show in Tijuana, El Hijo del Santo, La Parka and Super Parka defeat Rey Misterio Sr., Halloween and Damian in the main event. In an under card match, Psicosis loses to his brother Fobia in a ladder match.

OCTOBER

1 - El Brazo Jr., son of Los Brazos, makes his pro debut in Tlalnepantla.

6 - Negro Casas beats archrival El Hijo del Santo in the finals of the Leyenda de Plata (Legend of the silver mask) tournament at Arena Mexico.

MASANORI SAITO 8 - Mil Mascaras defends the old IWA Heavyweight title successfully against Jerry Estrada in Monterrey.

13 - Psicosis defeats Fobia, his younger brother, in a hair vs. hair match in Tijuana. Fishman Jr. makes his pro debut on the under card, teaming with his legendary father.

15 - Ricky Marvin defeats Coreano in a hair vs. hair match in Nezahualcoyotl.

18 - A special show is held in Tlalnepantla to commemorate the 18th anniversary of El Hijo del Santo's pro debut. Santo defeats Blue Panther and El Hijo Del Diablo in a triangle match in the main event.

AAA's annual Noche del Terror (Night of Terror) show in San Louis Potosi sees Heavy Metal, Perro Aguayo Jr. and La Parka Jr. defeat Cibernetico and the HeadHunters in the main event.

23 - Karloff Lagarde Jr. captures the Mexican National Welterweight Title from Astro Rey Jr. in Puebla.

27 - Blue Panther wins the Leyenda Azul tournament at Arena Mexico. The tournament is held in honour of Blue Demon.

29 - Mega & Super Mega defeat Fantasy & The Star Boy to win the IWRG Tag Team Titles in Naucalpan.

NOVEMBER

1 - Astro Rey Jr. defeats Karloff Lagarde Jr. in a mask vs. hair match in Puebla.

2 - Super Mega loses his mask in Naucalpan in a cage match where the last man remaining is forced to unmask.

6 - Negro Casas defeats Bestia Salvaje in a hair vs. hair match in Nuevo Laredo.

MASANORI SAITO 13 - Damian defeats Super Calo in a hair vs. hair match in Nuevo Laredo. Damian was supposed to face a protege of Fray Tormenta, the famous wrestling priest.

19 - Bombero Infernal defeats Black Dragon in Naucalpan to win the IWRG Intercontinental Middleweight Title.

23 - El Hijo Del Diablo defeats El Hijo del Santo in Iguala to win the WWA World Welterweight Title.

24 - Rayo de Jalisco Sr., a main-eventer in Mexico in the 60s and 70s, is attacked by Los Hermanos Dinamitas on 'Rayo de Jalisco Sr. Night' at Arena Mexico.

Rey Misterio Sr. and Scorpio Jr. defeat Rey Misterio Jr. and Psicosis in the main event of an indy show in Tijuana.

29 - Ricky Marvin wins the Mexican National Lightweight Title from Virus in Acapulco.

DECEMBER

1 - Juventud Guerrera returns to AAA, tagging with the HeadHunters against Octagon, Venum Black and Zorro in Tijuana.

3 - Haytor defeats Humberto Garza Jr. in a hair vs. hair match on an AAA show in Monterrey.

MASANORI SAITO 8 - At AAA's Guerrera de Titans (War of the Titans) show in Madero, Latin Lover and Hector Garza defeat Heavy Metal and Perro Aguayo Jr. in a bloody and wild extreme cage match.

12 - Ricky Marvin retains his Mexican National lightweight title against Virus in a 30-minute match-of-the-year candidate in Mexico City.

15 - EMLL runs its annual year-end spectacular at Arena Mexico on pay-per-view as Perro Aguayo defeats long-time rival Cien Caras in a hair vs. hair match. On the under card, CMLL World Tag champs Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero defeat Negro Casas and El Hijo del Santo.

16 - Blue Demon one of the most famous wrestlers in the history of Mexican wrestling, dies of a heart attack. He was 78.
