Akiyama crowned NOAH champion
By JOHN F. MOLINARO -- SLAM! Wrestling

Jun Akiyama won his first singles world title today in Tokyo, Japan defeating Kenta Kobashi to become the very first world champion for Mitsuhara Misawa's Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion.

Akiyama defeated Kobashi with a front-choke submission at 24:25 to win the title before a sellout crowd at Tokyo's Differ Ariake wrestling complex. Akiyama and Kobashi won the right to vie for the title after teaming up to defeat Misawa and Akira Taue yesterday at the promotion's debut show.

The win was Akiyama's first ever over Kobashi. The two had met previously several times when they competed in All Japan Pr Wrestling, before siding with Misawa when he split from All Japan to form Pro Wrestling NOAH earlier this summer.

Akiyama, age 30, has been wrestling professionally for eight years, having debuted on September 17, 1992. With the win today, promoter Misawa has made it clear that he is putting the promotion's future hopes directly on Akiyama's shoulders.

Other results from the show saw Satoru Asako defeat Kenta Kobayashi; Makoto Hashi, Mitsuo Momota and Rusher Kimura defeated Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Tsuyoshi Kikuchi and Haruka Eigen; Takeshi Morishima and Masao Inoue defeated Masamichi Marufuji and Takeshi Rikio; Jun Izumida and Akira Taue defeated Yoshihiro Takayama and Takao Omori; Yoshinari Ogawa and Mitsuharu Misawa defeated Kentaro Shiga and Daisuke Ikeda.
