The legendary Stu Hart, having spent the last month fighting ill health, has
been told that he will need to undergo surgery to install a pacemaker to
regulate his heartbeat.
Stu, who turns 86 next week, was first taken to hospital two weeks ago after
a prolonged period of ill health. Doctors quickly discovered that he was
suffering from pneumonia, and needed fluid drained from around his lungs and
heart. The procedure kept him in Calgary's Rockyview hospital for almost two
weeks.
He was released from the hospital on Monday morning, only under the
provision that he bring oxygen tanks home to aid his breathing, which has
caused him considerable difficulty. Now it is known that he will have to
return to hospital in the upcoming days. Doctors hope that a pacemaker will
correct his irregular heartbeat, which has resulted in serious medical
complications.
Stu thanked all the fans who sent in their well wishes in the last several
weeks at his home on Monday, where a photographer from the Calgary Herald
took shots of the humbled wrestling icon. Stu, his wife Helen and many of
their twelve children have spent the last several days working through
letters from eighteen countries all over the world. It has made a genuinely
profound difference to their outlook. "I had no idea that people knew I was
in hospital," Stu admitted. "It's... heartwarming."
Stu has anxiously delved into a fresh batch of letters every day for the
last week, and there's still hundreds more he hasn't gotten to.
"The fans have made a great difference to my dad," said Ellie Hart. "I don't
think any of us realized just how many people care."
