Proudly Canadian
By BRET "THE HIT MAN" HART -- For the Calgary Sun

One of the big questions you've been asking me in your letters is if I'm going to bring any new members into The Hart Foundation. I wasn't planning on it, at least right now, but with the recent heroic actions of Frank Sisson, he'd be my first-round draft pick! From the entire Hart family, all the best for a speedy recovery, Frank!

SummerSlam. Aug. 29, 1992. The Hitman lost the Intercontinental title to the British Bulldog at London's Wembley Stadium. It was one of the best matches of my career and it was the best SummerSlam match of all time. Some people don't understand how I can feel that way since I lost. Just look at the tape. In the WWF back then, it wasn't whether you won or lost but how you played the game.

After that match, the WWF decided to play a few games of their own. A bunch of guys were laid off and the cards were changed around and at the last minute, when they had no one to challenge Ric Flair for the World Heavyweight title in Saskatoon, they threw it to me.

Oct. 12, 1992, the day the WWF suddenly found themselves with a Canadian champion! Back then, the American wrestling fans still respected technical ability and sportsmanship. They cheered me on -- just like my fans in Canada and every place else around the world.

The WWF had no clue what to do with their new Canadian champ because Vince McMahon was still clinging to the idea that WWF champions who aren't American are the bad guys. The last thing they expected or wanted was a world champion from Canada who had millions of loyal fans around the world cheering him on!

McMahon and the suits didn't know how to deal with it. McMahon was concerned that they wouldn't be able to market `the Canadian boy'. They underestimated my popularity

So on April 4, 1992, at Wrestlemania 9, when Mr. Fuji threw salt in my face, giving Yokozuna the win and the belt -- it was an attempt to redefine that in the WWF non-American champs are the bad guys.

Nov. 23, 1994. Survivor Series. I love my mom but she wasn't authorized to throw in the towel, costing me the title to then-candidate for the American Presidency, Bob Backlund. Did they let it stand? Of course they did. Two titles stolen from this Canadian, back to America.

March 31, 1996. Wrestlemania 12. I was defending my third world title against Shawn Michaels. In the 62nd minute of what was supposed to be a 60-minute iron man match, they gave my belt to Shawn Michaels. Three titles stolen, back to America.

March 24, 1997. The Undertaker didn't want to have to beat The Hitman to win the WWF title so he slammed a steel door in my face during my title defence against Psycho Sid and there went a fourth title stolen ... back to America!

SummerSlam. Aug. 3, 1997. In a desperate attempt to insure that the belt will stay on an American phenom, the WWF has made Shawn Michaels the special ref for my title match with Undertaker. Is there any way they can make it any more obvious how biased they are?

I will defeat The Undertaker at SummerSlam! I will become five-time WWF champion! I will bring the WWF world title back to Canada! If I win, Vince shouldn't have any problem with a Canadian champion this time 'cause now wrestling fans in America really hate me big time. And even if I lose the match, I still win, because I never, ever have to wrestle on American soil again!
