Hitman's true colours

Bret, junior Hitmen climbing to the top together

By BRET "The Hitman" HART -- For The Calgary Sun
It means a lot to me that the Calgary Hitmen told me means a lot to them that I'll wear my Hitmen jersey on TV every week until they win the Memorial Cup.

They're so close to winning the regular season title, and they thanked me for the motivational push.

But they decided to push me back -- hard.

They made it clear that the only place the Hitman should be is on top -- just like the Hitmen.

Moran made me promise to maul Malenko for ripping up my groin.

Fomitchev wants me to give Piper a wake-up call because he doesn't like how Piper takes off for months at a time and then comes back thinking he's the cock o' the walk.

Dodginghorse doesn't have high de-mands on me, he just wants me to wipe the mat with Hogan.

Shannon insists I knock Nash down a few pegs.

And wouldn't you know it, Dean Clark instructed me to show Goldberg that he's got a lot to learn.

All right boys, I guess I had it coming.

I'll see President Flair about making it happen.

Meanwhile, you'll see me wearing my Hitmen jersey on Nitro.

 Three cheers for President Flair.

 Hallelujah. Amen. Oh brother.

Does anyone see a conflict with an active wrestler being president of the WCW?

 I do.

With very rare exceptions, and Flair is one of them. Whatever differences I have with Flair are far outweighed by my need for salvation.

 Salvation of WCW.

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

 -- Mr. Spock

A lesser man might use the WCW Presidency for self-promotion. A lesser man might discriminately book matches that would make himself and his friends more popular -- without regard for what is good for the company in the long run.

A lesser man might even make a list of guys who aren't his buddies and plot ways to systematically cut them off at the knees. I've seen it happen.

But Flair is a professional. We all know he loves the glamour and the glory, but never loses sight of the fact that, beyond that, he loves the business.

He'll do what's right for the long run. When you're truly confident, you don't need to seek the constant approval of the spotlight.

When Flair won the presidency for life, WCW was rejuvenated. Reborn. And renegotiated.

No doubt, there will be a lot of changes -- for the better.

Where does this leave Eric Bischoff?

 Where is Eric Bischoff?

Last I heard, he was vacationing in Italy with his daughter. But what's his status when he gets back?

When he was president, Bischoff said he wanted to give Kevin Nash a chance to sink or swim as WCW's new booker.

Will Flair keep Nash as booker?

What are Nash's booking strategies? I have no idea, but here's an insightful email I got from Darren in Kamloops.

He writes, "I shared a few beers with Kevin Nash at a night club in N.Y. a few weeks ago when I was there on vacation. We talked. I told him I was from Canada, and he mentioned you, Mr. Hart. I asked him if he was going to use his booking power to get you a shot at the title. He laughed drunkenly and said, 'Hell no, Ole Bret is too old and broken down ... You will never see Bret Hart as WCW Champion.' He sounded serious. Just to let you know."

Thanks, Darren, for letting us know. Do I believe Darren? Well, let's just say this is only one of quite a few similar letters I've received from fans who don't know each other. You be the judge.

On the other hand, Ric Flair is Nash's boss now. Flair is older than me. He's WCW champion. He beat Hollywood Hogan.

Or is it Hulk Hogan? I could swear I heard them call him Hulk on Thunder. And was that cheering I heard? Do you really think they're cheering Hogan because he exposed the real Ric Flair, a guy who turned his back on his son to become 14-time champion? Hogwash! I don't buy it.

I don't even entertain the thought that Flair spurned his son. Of course he went for the title, because the stipulation in that match is that he'd also become WCW Prez for life. That makes Flair Hogan's boss. And with Bischoff ousted, or at least in limbo, Hogan has the Prez in his face, instead of in his pocket. When David realizes that, he'll open his eyes. Flair will never get his son back.

So, why is Hogan being cheered? For hiring two dime-a-dozen bimbos to seduce a kid who hasn't lived enough to tell the difference between trash and class?

I think something else is happening. Something good, maybe.

I think they're cheering for Hulk Hogan because it brings back a distant feeling of when things were right in wrestling. When good guys were heroes.

They don't realize it yet, but they're understanding what I've been saying all along. Without heroes, there's no one to beat the bad guys. If everyone is bad, there's no way to win.

 There's something happenin' here

What it is, ain't exactly clear

 Hey, what's that sound?

 Everybody look what's goin' down

 Paranoia cuts deep.
