Hitman has all the answers in no-holds-barred session with fans
By BRET 'The Hitman' HART -- For The Calgary Sun
I get interviewed a lot. I've been on big TV talk shows, little tiny radio stations and in everything from grade school newspapers to the Alberta Report. It's understandable that they all ask me the requisite background questions because they need to appeal to a wide audience.
Sometimes it's frustrating because it seems like just when we're getting to the Hart of the matter, we're out of space or time.
I realized that there are a lot of questions from my fans that we don't get to in these mass media interviews, so from time to time I'm going to make a point of answering your questions in this column. Here we can be more specific about things although, even with almost everyone reading this being a wrestling fan, there's still a broad range, from little kids to fans who have little kids to old people who have been watching since they were little kids.
The questions I'll answer will come from your letters. I'll start by answering the No. 1 question, which is: Do you read your fan mail because I've written to you at a lot of addresses? Yes, I do read my fan mail but I only have one fan mail address. You can e-mail me at HITMANclub@aol.com or write to me c/o Calgary Sun, 2615 12 St. N.E., Calgary, Alta. T2E 7W9 and they will forward your letter to HITMANclub, where it will be given special priority.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions in this week's mail.
I'm disappointed that you haven't gotten a title shot in WCW. What happened?
Me too, in a way. But in another way, I'm not. There's plenty of time for that. Maybe you should write to WCW and tell it to the booking committee. For those of you who don't know how it works, the booking committee decides who fights who. I have input, to a degree, but the final decisions belong to the booking committee. I've been told that I won't have long to wait for a title shot. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying working with all kinds of guys. What I've found is that WCW has this amazing depth of talent, from high flyers to mat technicians to brawlers. Sometimes it's just plain fun to go in there without the seriousness of a belt on the line and it gives me a chance to kick back and experiment with new moves. It's like the difference between a musician's biggest concert and when he's just in there jammin'. Every night can't be Wembley.
When are you going to wrestle in Canada again?
Next month, when Nitro comes to Toronto's new Air Canada Centre. When I'm going to wrestle in Calgary again is another story. WCW has been delayed in setting up a major Canadian tour because WWF has exclusive contracts with many of the arenas across the country. That means any other wrestling group can't appear in those buildings. Is WWF saying that you shouldn't have the right to choose which wrestling group you want to see? If you think that's unfair censorship, write to your local arena and let them know. Meanwhile, WCW has a plan in the works and I'd best leave it at that and not jinx it.
Is it true that there is going to be a Part 2 of the documentary Hitman Hart; Wrestling with Shadows?
As far as I know, there aren't any plans for Part 2 and I don't see the need for a sequel. The film is the definitive inside look at the wrestling business, so why play 'can you top this?' Most people in the business agree, although just a handful think it revealed too much about the business. With all due respect, I think they're out of touch with how the business is revealing itself. All I wanted to do was give people a better understanding of what pro wrestling is in the hopes that there would be more respect in preserving what I consider a dying art. I feel the film achieved this and I'm proud of it. If you're thinking, what's he talking about, the ratings are great, not dying? Yah, the ratings have always been good for soap operas and that's what wrestling has become.
Was the song that was in the documentary written especially for it?
From the words, you would think so. Actually, it's from the Bruce Cockburn album, Charity of Night. I'm one of those people who associates songs with various times or events in my life. I suspect there are probably a lot of you who do the same thing.
Did you start writing your book? I heard it's about what happened in Montreal.
Haven't we heard enough about that?
Yes, I've started working on my book and you'll be relieved to know it's not about what happened in Montreal. I've heard some people in the business are a bit leery of my book thinking, 'what's he going to say about the business or who is he going to rat out?' I wonder if they'd be relieved or if it would dent their egos to know that's not the point of my book at all.
It's not about them. It's years from being finished so the paranoid among you should just relax.
There have been all sorts of books and magazines about me and there'll probably be more of them before I write my book. Some will be authorized and some not. Some will be good and some not. The point is that I don't want you to confuse any of that with the book you've heard me say I want to write.
Will you ever go back to the WWF?
No. Thanks for writing and letting me know that my brother, Owen, recently said, in the WWF Magazine, that he's arranged for secret negotiations, between myself and Vince McMahon, to plan my return to WWF or something to that effect. I haven't seen it but even some WCW wrestlers have asked me about it.
I have no idea why Owen would say such a thing because there's no truth to it whatsoever. I also have no idea why WWF Magazine would say such a thing since implying that they're having secret negotiations with me is like admitting to tampering while I'm under contract to WCW.
When you're travelling do you eat fast food since you are so busy, or do you eat fancy food since wrestlers get paid a lot? Ryan MacCaffrey, 9, Red Deer.
Ryan, I like to eat where the food is good and the people are friendly.
Any more TV appearances coming up soon?
Yes, as a matter of fact, I'm on Mad TV tonight. As far as I was concerned, it was all settled between me and Will Sasso on Nitro until fans told me he's been saying stuff about me.
Tune in to Mad TV tonight to see what happens when I pay Will a visit.
And to Bobby 'The Brainless' Heenan, who said, on Thunder, that next year the Calgary Hitmen will be lucky to finally have skates ... I think the ol' Weasel needs to take into account that with only five points to go to the Eastern Conference crown with 13 games remaining, and No. 1 ranking in the CHL, I'm betting that the Hitman, along with some Hitmen, may very well be able to show him the Memorial Cup, close up and personal, on Thunder.
Wouldn't that be a great laugh?
 The Hitman appears each Saturday.
