Ottawa's Bruiser taken down for licensing offences

An Ottawa wrestler was slapped with $2,500 in fines yesterday after losing three out of four rounds in the courtroom.

Frederick 'Bruiser' Leeks, 35, was found guilty of three offences after organizing a wrestling match at Straits Dance Hall last year without getting a licence.

Originally charged with holding a sporting event without a licence, failing to submit gate taxes and two advertising offences, Leeks said he was victorious because he won one of the two misleading advertising offences -- "the one that mattered."

Dangerous Dan Gervais, another local wrestler, claimed that Leeks advertised a match between the pair but Gervais was never invited to wrestle at the match.

The man provided the court with a poster showing a body but no head on a wrestler and claimed it was his muscular physique in the photo. Gervais eventually admitted it wasn't his body on the poster.

The bar, now bankrupt, and the owner were also fined for running a sporting event without a licence.
