WCW pulls out of SkyDome; Nitro in Kitchener

By GREG OLIVER -- SLAM! Wrestling

The live WCW Monday Night Nitro that was scheduled for Toronto's SkyDome on September 18 has been moved down the 401 to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

WCW public relations confirmed the shift in location today, but could not verify why the move was made.

Kitchener is about an hour from Toronto and is a short jog for the WCW crew from the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York, where the Fall Brawl pay-per-view is originating from on Sunday, September 17.

SkyDome had been booked for the Nitro ever since the Air Canada Centre and WCW split company. The ACC has since made a deal with the WWF to run shows in their arena. The first date is Saturday, October 28.

The WWF was drawing anywhere from 15,000 to 26,000 at SkyDome, and many suspect that WCW would not have drawn numbers even close to that. WCW had planned to run the SkyTent, a smaller set-up in SkyDome, for Nitro.

The Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer is reporting that the reason that the move was made to Kitchener was because of a problem regarding timing of being able to set up the 'Dome.

The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium seats under 10,000, and is home to the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. It hosted a WCW Saturday Night taping last April, following a WCW show at the Air Canada Centre.

Ticket information for Kitchener has yet to be announced. Tickets were scheduled to go on sale for the SkyDome show on Friday, August 11.
