Stampede & WWF to celebrate Stu's 85th
By GREG OLIVER -- SLAM! Wrestling
Call it a birthday present to the wrestling fans of Calgary. Stampede Wrestling and the WWF are teaming up to celebrate
Stu Hart's 85th birthday on Wednesday, May 31, 2000.
The show will see Calgary-based promotion return to the Stampede Corral, scene of some of their greatest triumphs.
The WWF has agreed to participate, even though it's only four days after their show at the Saddledome in Calgary on Saturday, May 27. Wednesdays are generally an off-day for the WWF.
One match has been announced so far, and it features two grads of Stu Hart's Dungeon -- Winnipeg's
Chris Jericho facing Edmonton's
Chris Benoit for the WWF Intercontinental title. Many of the other WWF stars are expected in for the show. More names will be announced on the
Stampede Wrestling website over the next few weeks.
Also expected in for the show are some of the long-time friends of the Hart Family, like Terry and Dory Funk Jr.
Stu Hart was born May 3, 1915. In December 1995, following Stu's 80th birthday, a similar celebration was held with names like the Funks,
'Cowboy' Dan Kroffat,
Angelo Mosca and
Leo Burke in attendance at the show. The Stampede Wrestling promotion was in hiatus at the time.
