From Stamp-ede to Caribbean icon

Friday, October 8, 1999
By PETER SMITH -- Calgary Sun
Calgary's international wrestling colossus Bret Hitman Hart has finally been well and truly licked -- and he couldn't be happier.

Hart's been immortalized on a genuine postage stamp, which West Indian islanders are sticking on their letters in the Caribbean.

Hart appears on a sheet of eight World Championship Wrestling giants issued by the West Indian country of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

"Isn't that something -- who'd have thought it," said Hart, as he was shown the colourful stamps for the first time by the Calgary Sun yesterday.

Hart's only hope is that his English teacher from his schooldays gets to learn he's been honoured by appearing on a genuine postage stamp.

"She spent a lot of time telling me I'd be nothing but an utter failure," he said.

"I hope she sees I've made it."

Hart shares the dramatic sheet of stamps with other greats in the wrestling world -- Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Sting, Giant, Kevin Nash, Macho Man, Diamond Dallas Page and Goldberg.

"I'm in some pretty good company here."

He wasn't surprised the West Indies turned to wrestling stars for stamps -- after all, he has wrestled there.

"I wrestled all through there, in Antigua, Montserrat and Guadeloupe when I was with Stampede Wrestling," he said.

Hart's pumped that his appearance is about to give stamp collecting a mighty boost in the city -- especially for his favourite philatelist.

"I don't collect myself -- but my brother Smith's been a collector all his life," he said.

Now Bret's got one more stamp to add to Smith's collection.
