Michinoku wins in Montreal
Saturday,
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an unedited report from WWF house show at Montreal Friday, March 6, 1998
By BERTRAND HEBERT -- For SLAM! Wrestling
We got in around 7 pm and we could see the guys playing some football in the
back among them: Henry Godwinn, Billy Gunn, Goldust and Taka Michinoku. It
was quite sight to see Taka trying to catch a kick by Henry Godwinn. We
then got our pictures taken with Taka who was very nice. They had a great
advance with over 5000 sold and they were hoping for 9000 and it sure looked
in that ball park. The next show here in Montreal will be Sunday August 2
1998. But they should swing through Quebec City and Ottawa in July.
-In the first and best match of the evening Taka Michinoku beat Brian
Christopher with a small package. Both wrestlers were way over with the
crowd and is proof that tv exposure makes you a star. It was a good but
uneventfull match like the show itself was going to be.
Then they had Sable do an interview challenging
Luna Vachon in the middle of them
announcing that Owen Hart was not going to be here. Well people forgot
about Owen and were chanting Sable's name. It was a good way to keep the
crowd with them for the rest of the night.
-D-Lo Brown and Faarooq beat Miguel & Savio. The Borricuas when Faarooq pinned
Savio after Kama tripped him(Mark Henry was also in their corner): those 4
were not half as over as the cruiserweights or Sable. Funny moment was
Savio trying to start a shave your back chant to cheer Miguel so he would
make the hot tag. Borricuas were playing face.
-Barry Windham beat Tom Brandi with a lariat in the worst match of the night
as both seemed to be going at slow motion action replay mode. Brandi screwed
up the spot where the guy hang from the top rope and swing himself back in.
He was laughing about it with the referee. Guys had problems all night with
the loose ropes.
-Marc Mero beat AKA Goldust(wearing silver body suit and of course woman
underwear) after a rollup following Goldust hitting Luna by mistake. After
the match they had a short catfight between Luna and Sable.
-Ken Shamrock beat Rocky Maivia by DQ after the NOD interfered. Rocky got
a lot of "Rocky sucks" chant. But Rocky has become very good and he is way
over. Shamrock left with the belt even if the referee tried to take it away
from him.
-After the break The Quebecers beat The Godwinn after Pierre delivered a
legdrop to the back of the head of Phineas who was then pinned by Jacques.
Quebecers had beautiful blue outfit, I hope they will wear it on tv now.
Quebecers were way over with the crowd even with the non push they have been
getting on tv. They will wrestle for the tag team championship on the
August 2 show. Pierre executed a spectacular top rope hurruricanra from the
top rope on Phineas. They had a very good pop after the win.
-Cactus Jack(who got a great pop) beat Billy Gunn after a double arm DDT on
a garbage can in a no DQ anything goes match. Not great but ok with Billy
going into a table set in in the corner twice. After the match Billy got a
idiot fan thrown out for throwing a cup at him. Before the show started
they told us that people would get thrown out if they did and that the WWF
could cancelled the event with no refund if things got out of hand.
-Kane beat Skull with a tombstone in a match that lost all heat after Kane's
entrance. After the match 8-Ball and the referee were all chokeslam.
-In the main event Steve Austin beat Hunter Hearst Hemsley after a Stone Cold
stunner. Just before that Chyna got another stunner. They had maybe the
second best match of the night but they had over 15 minutes to work. They
had almost worked too long as people were expecting a finish around the 5
minutes mark by that point. Hunter is over as a heel but did not took the
mike or do any DX stuff. Austin is so over it is almost impossible to
describe. It is at least as good than when Hogan was on top. Tons of
Austin merchandise sold.
There was still some young kids at the show but a lot more adults than usual
and adolescents that I have ever seen at a house show. Not a bad show but
not can't miss show.
