Things get rowdy in Vancouver

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an unedited report from the Vancouver WWF show Friday night.

By NEIL O'BRIEN -- For SLAM! Wrestling
Show opening: Announcements about throwing objects into the ring could result with being ejected from the building OR the show could end with no refunds.

The "special guest ring attendant" is announced - Rhonda from a local HOOTERS, wearing the typical short HOOTERS T-Shirt and shorts uniform is introduced to a BIG pop.

Signs in the crowd: CHYNA IS THE TOUGHEST MAN IN THE WWF, CHYNA - MY ROOM IS 210, HEY SABLE WHERE'S SUNNY, and of course AUSTIN 3:16 signs everywhere.

FIRST MATCH: WWF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH -

TAKA MICHNOKU (Champion) defeated BRIAN CHRISTOPHER (5m 27s - 5:27) Rating: ***

Match started with Christopher stealing a sign from a fan that read "LAWLER IS MY FATHER". He then jumped into the ring and ripped the sign in half.Christopher played up to the fans and started some kind of a pelvic dance followed by flexing his muscles and posing. Fans, naturally, booed. Wrestling started with Christopher scoopslamming Michinoku to the mat. Mocking Michinoku, Christopher did the flamingo pose (from the Karate Kid movies) followed by a series of other fake karate poses. Fans began chanting "Jerry's Kid!" Michinoku got a fisherman's suplex by Christopher. Outside the ring, Michinoku springboard off the top rope onto Christopher out side the ring into the guard rail. Christopher then crotched Michinoku on the top rope as Michinoku tried to reenter the ring. Christopher then followed with a backbreaker on Michinoku. After a series of small kicks, Michinoku climbs the ropes and tries an Michinoku driver but missing as Christopher gets out of the way. Christopher goes for a powerbomb, Michinoku reverses and rolls into a pin on Christopher.

After the match, Christopher begins to argue with referee Tim White. Failing his war of words, Christopher again poses for the crowds. Leaving the ring, in "frustration" he kicks the ring steps and hurts his toe and limps back to the dressing room.

SECOND MATCH -

BRADSHAW defeated KAMA MUSTAFA (6m 27s) Rating: DUD!

The match is introduced by a guest ring announcer - teenaged kid. No heat of any kind from the fans during neither wrestler's entrances. No one seemed to care. Kama headlocks Bradshaw at the start of this match. Bradshaw took a weak looking swing at Kama and missed and "flies" over the top rope to the floor below. Kama is thrown head first into the steps outside the ring a couple of times. Bradshaw is the dominating force starting the match but got no heat from the crowd. The match was in slow motion. Near the end of the match, Kama went and missed on a Vader bomb from the second rope. Bradshaw executed a Russian Leg Sweep on Kama and managed to pin him down for the 3.

THIRD MATCH: "COUNTRY WHIPPIN' MATCH" - No DQ, No Time Limit -

GODWINNS defeated DISCIPLES OF APOCALYPSE (Skull & 8 Ball) (2m 04s) (Rating: *)

The Legion of Doom were originally scheduled to take on the Godwinns in this match. The Godwinns were first to be introduced and walked to the ring with straps in hand and NO BUCKETS! D.O.A. were then introduced and they walked (no motorcycles) to the ring. Skull and 8 Ball were also holding straps. The match began with all four men strapping away on each other at the same time. Finally the referee gained some control and it was a 1 on 1 instead of a 2 on 2 contest. Basically a match where the participants hit each other with the straps until Henry Godwinn slopdropped his way to a victory. After the match, Phineas got into an altercation with a fan as he was on his way to the dressing room. Security moved in and broke up the situation promptly.

FOURTH MATCH -

KANE (with Paul Bearer) defeated CHAINZ (3m 27s) (Rating: * - No surprises)

Chainz entered the ring (again with no motorcycle) to limited heat from the fans. The arena lights black out and the music starts. The arena is lit with red lighting as Kane (lead by Paul Bearer) walks down the aisle. Kane and Bearer enter the ring and Kane raises his hands to prepare for all of the ring posts to fire flames. Instead, after his arms raise into the air, the ring is just lit in white. No flames. House shows don't seem to bring the pyro crews. The fans boo as they wanted to see fire. Most of the arena remains in the red light. Chainz started throwing a series of punches at Kane (who no-sold the hits) prompting the bell to ring. Kane is forced out of the ring over the top rope. Kane takes several bumps into the stairs and guard rail. Back in the ring, Kane chokes out Chainz but Chainz kicks Kane and breaks free. Chain clumsily piledrives Kane into the canvas. Kane, again, no sells the move and then chokeslams Chainz. Chainz then feels Kane's Tombstone Piledriver and is pinned. Kane continues to choke Chainz as he lies flat on the canvas after the pin and would let go by order of Paul Bearer. Fellow D.O.A. members, Skull and 8 Ball, run from the dressing rooms into the ring to help Chainz. The force Kane off of Chainz and out of the ring over the top rope. Kane enters the ring and choke slams both Skull and 8 Ball leaving all of the D.O.A. flat out in the ring.

FIFTH MATCH - WWF EUROPEAN TITLE MATCH -

OWEN HART (Champion) defeats GOLDUST to retain title. (5m 57s) (Rating: ***)

Goldust is lead to the ring by Luna Vachon. Luna is wearing a Judy Jetson... make that a Psychotic Judy Jetson skirt (purple and see thru) with a silverish bikini. Goldust painted his face black (complete with a red FU) with his hair silver. Silver was also the color of his costume with a black teddy over covering. As Goldust climbed through the ropes, he paused and then motioned as he was humping the middle rope. Goldust then proceeded to kiss the ring announcer on the lips and took the microphone. "Shut your Canadian asses up!" Goldust demanded. He did some more mic work but was drowned out by the chants of "Owen! Owen!" by the fans. It was Owen's turn to be introduced. Owen got the second biggest pop of the night. Owen walked to the ring carrying a large Canadian flag and was wearing a hometeam colored Vancouver Canucks jersey. More mic work by Goldust insisting that Owen get rid of the jersey because it was not a hockey game. Goldust was attacked by Owen inside the ring with a series of punches to the face. Goldust was stumbling around outside the ring, and was once again attacked by Owen with a series of punches to the face... all while he was still wearing the Canucks jersey. Owen was driven several times into the ring steps by Goldust. Owen lost the jersey as Goldust climbed back into the ring. Owen, back in the ring, is lifted and dropped onto the top rope. Luna then attacks Owen as Goldust is admonished by the referee. Owen finally gets a flying body press onto Goldust for the first pin attempt in the match. Goldust then gets Owen into a sleeper. Owen the manages to crotch Goldust on the ring post. HUGE pop by the fans. Owen then gets The Sharpshooter on Goldust for a submission win. After the bell rings, Luna jumps into the ring to save her man Goldust but Owen then gets LUNA into The Sharpshooter. As Luna is flat out in the middle of the ring, Owen drapes the Canadian flag across Luna and leaves the ring. Goldust then climbs back into the ring to comfort Luna. Crowd boos heavily.

SIXTH MATCH - WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

NEW AGE OUTLAWS defeated CACTUS JACK & CHAINSAW CHARLIE (7m 05s) (Rating: **) (Champions)

The fans were getting quite rowdy around the time this match got going. Several fan fights throughout the match distracted the attention away from the in-ring action. New Age Outlaws were first to be introduced. There was no, "OH, YOU DIDN'T KNOW?" on the part of Road Dog here. Just a straight introduction to a rather surprisingly dead reaction from the crowd. Road Dog grabbed the mic and addressed the ring announcer. "YOU must be from Vancouver, E-H? Because you suck!" Fans starting throwing objects into the ring and Road Dog announced, "I just talk to Billy Gunn... and he says that he's not going to wrestle. You guys just got screwed!" Then the New Age Outlaws left. There was some confusion as the ring was still lit but no one was in it. The ring announcer just stood outside the ring waiting for some kind of a cue. About 5 minutes after N.A.O. left, the ring announcer introduces The Challengers (Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie). Jack enters the ring holding a hockey stick and Charlie rolls out a garbage can loaded full of stuff and pulls out a Caution Wet Floor plastic sign as he first enters the ring. REalizing that the N.A.O. aren't in the ring, Jack and Charlie leave to go to the dressing rooms. Dragging Road Dog by the hair, Charlie appears through the curtain (followed by Jack who's dragging Billy by the hair) and they enter the ring. Typical brawl with garbage cans, bags, cookie sheets, folding chairs and hockey sticks. A couple of fan fights during this match. Jack at one point threw powder into the face of Billy. Jack then grabbed Billy and Road Dog by their groins at the same time. After Jack lets them go, Billy smacks Charlie across the head with a chair and lies him out for Road Dog to get the pin.

INTERMISSION - Ring announcer announces that the WWF returns to Vancouver at GM Place on July 4, 1998. Tickets already on sale. A fan also made a marriage proposal to a woman out of intermission in the ring. She said "Yes."

SEVENTH MATCH:

SABLE with "MARVELOUS" MARC MERO defeated TOM BRANDI (4m 23s) (Rating: *)

Brandi was first to enter the ring with no reaction by the fans. Sable got the 3rd biggest pop of the night as she was lead to the ring by Mero. Sable was decked out in her tight black outfit. Mero ordered Sable to disrobe him once they were in the ring. Mero, as seen on TV, orders Sable out of the ring and she reluctantly leaves. Mero dominated the match in the early stages. Sable returned to the ringside area to cheer Mero on. Brandi was the first to get a pin attempt at a 2 count. Yet ANOTHER fight by the fans in the crowd distracted the attention from the match. The referee was distracted by Sable as it appeared she injured her leg and Mero managed to get Brandi into a pinning position and got the 3 count to win. After the match is finished, Luna, with Goldust trying to hold her back, runs to the ring. Sable is held back by Mero. Luna and Sable start reaching for each other while being held back by various officials and wrestlers. After Luna and Goldust leave, Sable and Mero start arguing with each other and Sable shaves Mero down to the canvas. Sable leaves the ring but returns and Mero cowards out and leaves. Sable stands alone in the ring.

EIGHTH MATCH - INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH -

''THE ROCK'' ROCKY MAIVIA (Champion) defeated KEN SHAMROCK (6m 30s) (*1/2)

The Rock is first to be introduced and is escorted to ring by Nation of Domination members, D Lo Brown, Kama Mustafa and Mark Henry. Some heat from the fans. Ken Shamrock made his way to the ring with a big pop from the fans. D-Lo successfully manages to distract Shamrock on the ring apron and Rock sneaks up from behind and attacks. This happened twice at different sides of the ring. Shamrock fires a series of kicks onto Rock however Rock came close to getting the pinfall first. Rock then placed a sleeper on Shamrock. Later, Shamrock executed a flying body press on to Rock and then followed up with a Fisherman's Suplex. N.O.D. members distract the referee the whole time. Shamrock, accidentally knocked down referee Tim White with a clothesline. Ref's down, D Lo throws a chair into the ring. Rock hits Shamrock with the chair. Rock goes for the cover, Kama brings to the referee and Rock scores the pin. After the match, Shamrock "Goes to the Zone" again and ruins the N.O.D.'s post match celebration by giving them all belly-to-belly suplexes until N.O.D. clears out.

NINTH MATCH - TAG TEAM "ACTION":

QUEBECERS (JACQUES & PIERRE) defeated HEADBANGERS (MOSH & THRASHER) (4:18) (0*)

If you've seen one match with these guys... you've seen them all. The crowd was not at all into this match. The Qubecers came to the ring first. Pierre held the Canadian flag and got a better response from the Western Canadian fans than Jacques who carried the flag of Quebec. The Headbangers were introduced as N.W.A. champions. The Headbangers wore the belts to the ring, This match was not for the title. Jacques played up the crowd a bit by posing ... little reaction. They had the match and Pierre got the pin over Thrasher.

TENTH MATCH -

STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN defeated HUNTER HEARST-HELMSLEY (10m 13s) (***)

Chyna lead HHH to the ring as they were the first to be introduced. The D-X Theme was drowned out by the boos of the fans. Of course, things were being yelled at Chyna... you could imagine what. HHH crotch chopped the crowd once he was in the ring. Then it was STONE COLD's time to be introduced. There was no other pop of the nighter louder than for Austin. Austin made his way to the ring. HHH and Chyna cleared the ring as Austin climbed to the second rope with both arms in the air as fans cheered. HHH climbs back into the ring once the music dies and treats Austin to a crotch chop. Austin then treats HHH to a hit in the face. HHH leaves the ring to recompose himself. Once back in the ring, Austin gives HHH a reverse atomic drop. Just as Austin was about to do a "Wanna shake my hand?" routine, a fight breaks out in the crowd (again.) Attention is distracted from the match as even Austin and HHH took time out to watch security attempt o break up the fight. As HHH was watching the fan fight, Austin took advantage by sneaking up from behind HHH and throwing HHH's face into a turnbuckle pad. The crowd in GM Place seemed more interested the fan fight and weren't paying too much attention to the match. HHH grabbed Austin and neck dragged him to the canvas. HHH then dropped his knee onto Austin's head. Austin managed to get a short lived Million Dollar Dream on HHH... but HHH broke free. Austin then gave HHH a series of punches to HHH's face. Austin accidentally hit Earl Hebner the referee. Ref is down. Austin tries to give HHH the Cold Stone Stunner. HHH holds Austin in a Full Nelson. Chyna gets in the ring and Austin kicks her. Austin then kicks HHH in the groin to break free. Austin gives Chyna the stunner! HUGE pop from the fans! Austin then stuns HHH. Austin then pins HHH for a SLOW 3 count by a drowsy referee. Austin wins.

OVERALL - By FAR the most rowdiest crowd to ever attend a WWF event in Vancouver. There were many building ejections for a lot of reasons... but fighting must have topped the list. Good crowd in numbers... but rowdy. Owen Hart, Cactus Jack and Tom Brandi did an autograph signing session earlier in the afternoon at the Vancouver Virgin MegaStore. Huge crowd showed for that.
