    World skating hard to figure

     HELSINKI, Finland -- This was not how it was supposed to go for the United States at figure skating's world championships.
     Michelle Kwan and Michael Weiss both won medals, but the results were a bit confounding: Kwan was supposed to do better than silver; Weiss was not supposed to win a medal at all.

    Russians sweep gold at controversial meet

     HELSINKI -- Russians so dominated the world figure skating championships that even pairs judge Sviatoslav Babenko gained instant fame by winning the tap dancing contest.
     Russian skaters won one-half the 12 medals and gave their country the distinction of being the first to hog all the gold.

    Butyrskaya wins world title

     HELSINKI, Finland (AP) -- Maria Butyrskaya of Russia dethroned Michelle Kwan for the women's title at the World Figure Skating Championships today with a magnificent performance in the free skating.
     Butyrskaya was an artist on ice as she executed dynamic jumps, including seven triple jumps, exquisite footwork and powerful spins.

    Jennifer Robinson finishes 18th

     HELSINKI -- Maria Butyrskaya completed a Russian sweep of the world figure skating championship gold medals by winning the women's singles title today.
     The Moscovite, 26, laid down a perfect four minutes of dynamic jumps, including seven triple jumps, exquisite footwork and powerful spins to finally win the championship after finishing fourth in 1996, fifth in 1997 and third in 1998.

    13-year old has blast

     HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - For a 13-year-old figure skater who was not supposed to be at the World Championships, Sarah Hughes had a great time.
     Hughes nailed six triples to finish sixth in the free skating and seventh overall as Maria Butyrskaya of Russia beat out American Michelle Kwan for the title.
