French and English unions make threats
LONDON (AP) -- Four days after the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup, the fallout continued today over the tournament's organizational problems.The French and English Unions have withheld gate takings from the group and knockout phases until they are satisfied with accounting methods used by tournament host, Wales, according to British media reports.
World Cup won't discipline French
CARDIFF, Wales (AP) -- Despite on-field complaints by the Australians of eye-gouging and foul play, World Cup organizers decided today not to take any disciplinary action over Saturday's tournament final.A World Cup spokeswoman said the citing commissioner had reviewed the video of Australia's 35-12 win over France but had not identified the alleged incidents which the Wallabies had complained of.
London Irish join bidding war
LONDON (AP) -- English rugby club London Irish confirmed today it had joined the bidding war for All Blacks winger Jonah Lomu.Irish is vying with league rivals Bristol and rugby league clubs Leeds Rhinos, Wakefield and the Auckland Warriors to sign the six-foot-five 264-pound rugby giant, whose contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union expired after the World Cup.
Wallabies arrive home with trophy
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Less than 48 hours after their World Cup final win over France, Australia's rugby union team arrived home to the chants of Waltzing Matilda at Sydney airport today.The most popular passenger on Qantas Flight 2 from London was "Bill" -- the William Webb Ellis Trophy emblematic of the World Cup title that Australia also won in 1991.
