American League

Koskie closing in on century-mark

By JON COOK -- SLAM! Canadian Baseball

Minnesota Twins third baseman Corey Koskie is having a career year.

The Anola, Manitoba native's run-scoring single in a 12-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, gave him 90 RBI on the season.

Koskie leads the Twins in runs batted in and home runs (23) and is on pace for his first 100-RBI season. Koskie's 90 RBIs is the most for the Twins since 1996, when Paul Molitor had 113 and Marty Cordova drove in 111.

His single in the third inning gave the Twins a 3-0 lead and chased fellow Canadian Aaron Myette from the game for Texas. Right-hander Myette, a Surrey, BC, native, was battered for four runs and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings.

"He isn't going to be perfect every time," Rangers manager Jerry Narron said. "We've had our share of nights like tonight. He didn't have very good stuff and they swung the bats well. We just got beat."

National League
Reitsma hurt by long ball

Vinny Castilla's second-inning homer off Chris Reitsma in the Houston Astros 10-3 victory over Cincinnati, was the 179th off Reds pitchers this season. The franchise record for homers allowed is 190 in 1999.

Castilla finished his impressive series by hitting a three-run homer and an RBI double off Reitsma (7-14), then a two-run double off reliever Jim Brower. He went 8-for-13 in the series with five singles, two doubles, a homer and seven RBIs.

"Last night, he hit a couple of fastballs in," Reitsma said. "The plan was to do as much as we could to mix up his rhythm, but he just hit my mistakes."

Reitsma, of Calgary, AB, has given up at least one homer in each of his last seven starts.

 Walker's average drops

Colorado Rockies outfielder Larry Walker went 0-for-3 with a walk on Wednesday against the Dodgers, dropping his NL-leading batting average to .346. The Maple Ridge, BC, slugger is attempting to become the second Canadian to win a National League batting title, since he accomplished the feat with the Rockies in 1998 and 1999, hitting .363 and .379 respectively.
