Wednesday, July 4, 2001 Dempster shuts out ExposMONTREAL (CP) -- Ryan Dempster feels comfortable in Canada, shaving cream and all.Dempster, from Gibsons, B.C., improved to a career 5-0 in Canada with a complete-game, four-hit shutout as the Florida Marlins pounded out five doubles in a 7-0 victory over the Montreal Expos on Tuesday night. "I don't try and figure it out," said Dempster, who took a plate of shaving cream to the face on live television following the victory. "I have some sort of success at this park. As long as it keeps happening, I'm not going to try and figure out why it's happening....I like coming home, I guess." Dempster (9-8) gave up two hits in the first innnig and then retired 16 of the next 17 batters in pitching his second career shutout and third career complete game. "Any time you can go out there and shut a team out it's pretty exciting," said Dempster. "I just tried to throw strike one and get ahead. That's the big recipe to win in this game and being successful, getting ahead and throwing strikes." Marlins catcher Charles Johnson had two doubles and three RBIs. "(Dempster) was solid," said Johnson. "He threw everything today, he had all of his pitches working. "He had a nice fastball, and he was locating it very well to set up other pitches. When he does that, he's tough." Tony Armas Jr. (7-7) lost to the Marlins for the second time in less than a week, giving up five runs on six hits over six innings in front of another dismal home crowd of 4,690. He struck out six. |
