Ruptured Achilles ends Ducey's season

ATLANTA (AP) -- Montreal Expos outfielder Rob Ducey ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the first inning Sunday and will miss the rest of the season.

Ducey, of Cambridge, Ont., had to be helped off the field in the first inning after falling awkwardly against the outfield wall in a failed attempt to rob Atlanta's Brian Jordan of a three-run homer.

"I felt a pop on the way up, and I knew if I landed on it, it would not be a good experience," Ducey said. "Obviously, I will make every effort to return. I understand age-wise it may be difficult. I don't want to be a finished player."

Ducey, 36, will likely be sidelined for seven months. He was signed by Montreal on June 14, eight days after Philadelphia released him. He had a .239 average with two homers and eight RBIs in 46 at-bats for Montreal.

A career .242 hitter who came up through the Toronto organization, Ducey spent parts of six seasons with the Blue Jays before being dealt to the Angels in 1992.

He also played for Texas and Seattle and spent two years in Japan. Ducey will undergo an operation in four or five days.

 Reitsma hit hard

MIAMI (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds are getting younger, not better.

Florida had 15 hits off an inexperienced Reds pitching staff Sunday as the Marlins beat Cincinnati 11-7.

Reds rookie Chris Reitsma, of Calgary, AB, gave up seven runs -- five earned -- and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings as Cincinnati lost for the 15th time in 19 games.

The game was delayed by rain for 43 minutes in the first inning.

"The rain delay hurt me," said Reitsma, who fell to 4-10. "I didn't feel the same afterwards. I had to warm up all over again, but that's no excuse."

Charles Johnson, Dave Berg, Derrek Lee and Eric Owens each had two RBIs for Florida, 8-3 since the All-Star break. Luis Castillo and Mike Lowell had three hits apiece.

"(Reitsma) didn't put the ball where he wanted to," Reds manager Bob Boone said. "His arm speed was slow on the changeup."

 Koskie among leaders

Minnesota Twins third baseman Corey Koskie leads the team in doubles, after hitting his 26th of the season in a 3-2 loss to Seattle Monday afternoon.

The Anola, MB, native went 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .277. He just missed his 65th RBI when teammate Chad Allen was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from second on Koskie's single in the eighth inning.
