Gagne can't beat Expos

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers twice had chances to beat the last-place Montreal Expos, only to see the potential go-ahead run thrown out at the plate.

The wasted opportunities added up to the Dodgers' sixth loss in seven games, a 7-3 defeat Thursday that dropped them 31/2 games behind first-place Arizona and three back of second-place San Francisco in the NL West.

"We know we can beat everybody and play good baseball," said Eric Gagne, who allowed one earned run in seven innings but did not figure in the decision.

"We're just in a little funk right now and we have to get out of it. But we're still positive. We just have to keep playing hard every day and things will turn around," he said.

Gagne, a Montreal native, is 0-1 against the Expos, despite having a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings.

 Walker pursues third batting crown

Colorado's Larry Walker went 3-for-4 in a loss to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, raising his average to .353, second in the NL.

The Maple Ridge, B.C., outfielder trails former Montreal teammate Moises Alou (.359) for the overall lead.

Walker won NL batting titles with the Rockies in 1998 and 1999, hitting .363 and .379 respectively.
