Alex The Great, Brnardic explode
Player of the Week, Week Six Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT For SLAM! Canadian Baseball
Never mind Major League Baseball expanding to Europe, as has been discussed of late.
College ball is already a hit across the pond.
Well, at least it is in Kempton, Germany, close to Oberstdorf, normally known as the renowned home of ski jumping and Nordic skiing.
There, Renate Weber listens to New Mexico State Aggies games on the internet.
And on March 15, her day, her 69th birthday, her grandson, Alex Borgo, of New Mexico State hit a home run, his 10th of the season in a 21-1 win over the LaSalle Explorers, who came west to discover that they could not get Borgo out.
It was like every day was his grandma's birthday as he hit four home runs in the four-game sweep.
In six games last week, Borgo batted .615 (16-for-26) with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 21 RBIs. He had a slugging percentage of 1.462 and an on-base percentage of .645.
Borgo has been named co-winner of the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball News. Borgo shares the award with Grant Reynolds, of Kennesaw State, Tony Neal, of South Alabama, and Jeff Petersen of Washington.
So, who are we to argue with Collegiate Baseball and Renate and all of Kempton, Germany, where Borgo is Player of the Week all 52 weeks.
Just as we were about anoint Borgo, we discovered DH Ryan Brnardic of the 6th-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State Savages.
While Borgo's five homers and 21 RBIs were outstanding, Brnardic's week wasn't too shabby either. Brnardic hit five homers and drive in 17 runs.
So, Borgo (senior, Cookstown, Ont.) and Brnardic (senior, Lasalle, Ont.) are co-winners of the SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week honours. In other words while one Canuck showed LaSalle the way home, a Lasalle native was equally as good.
Borgo and Brnardic edged out shortstop Matt Rogelstad (junior, Coquitlam, BC) of the Arkansas State Indians and third baseman Ivan Naccarata (junior, Longeuil, Que.) of the LSU Fighting Tigers.
The weekly award recognizes the best of the 523 Canadians playing south of the border.
New Mexico is the land of spicy foods, native-Indians and flying baseballs in the light air.
Coach Gary Ward thought Borgo would have an excellent chance of winning the Sunbelt Conference Player of the Week. He did win that and better than that Borgo shares a national honor not to mention the Canadian award and international acclaim.
Last spring Ryan Kenning (North Vancouver, BC) won the the Collegiate Baseball recognition in Week five and the SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week honours, one of three times he won.
Now, Borgo the Aggie lead-off hitter owns a .435 average with 42 runs scored, 10 doubles, 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. Borgo now has a nine-game hitting streak and during that stretch he is batting .564 (22-39).
How Borgo's magical week that was went as he knocked in:
Four runs in a 14-4 win over LaSalle before 242 fans at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, NM. Borgo led off the game with his seventh homer of the season, this one a line-drive laser to right field, he led off the third inning with his eighth homer to centre, a mammoth shot over the flagpole in centre to put the Aggies up 4-0 and he hit a two-run double to left for a 13-4 lead.
Eight -- yes we are not making this up -- eight runs in a 19-13 slugfest New Mexico State win over LaSalle before 237 fans. The Aggies were winning 7-3 when they surrendered a 10-spot in the fifth. Borgo hit a scoring fly ball in the second, then hit a three-run homer in the fourth, singled and scored in the fifth, delivered an RBI single to centre in the sixth, hit a two-run double in the seventh and finally an RBI single in the eighth.
Three runs in a 21-1 romp over LaSalle before 332 fans. The Aggies took an early 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Borgo walked to lead off the game and scored, hit his ninth double and his 10th homer. Benefitting from the offence in this one was right-hander Rory Coppinger (junior, White Rock, BC). Coppinger pitched six scoreless innings for the win, allowing three hits, walking two and fanning four. Coppinger moves to 2-0 on the season. "Rory Coppinger had a few rough outings for us early this season, but at this level he needed to learn to thrust himself and he has. He was outstanding for and I'm happy with his performance," head coach Ward said.
Three runs in a 24-9 roughing up of LaSalle before 127 fans. Borgo was 4-for-6 with his 10th double
The Aggies scored a school-record 78 runs in the four-game series and belted 14 home runs, including four by Borgo. The Aggies also tied a school-record with their 17th straight home victory.
"We rebounded well from last weekend. We had a long week and it was nice to come home, win a series and get a chance to rest before conference play," Borgo said.
Two runs in a 4-0 win over the Texas San Antonio Roadrunners before 100 fans at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio, Tx. Borgo hit his sixth homer.
One run in a 3-1 loss to San Antonio, as he tripled and doubled.
While Collegiate Baseball counted the San Antonio games in their week, we had his performance in our previous week. No matter what week it is though, Borgo has been hitting.
Borgo hit .159 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 37 games in 2002. The difference? He has mastered the breaking ball. Before New Mexico he played at Maplewoods Centaurs junior college, where he worked out with former Maplewoods star Luis Pujols, a grad and now a star with the St. Louis Cardinals.
And before that Borgo played for Gary Wilson's Ontario Blue Jays Connie Mack team.
Borgo has played for Team Germany in world competitions, fortified by Obraten' cooked by his Oma.
Renate will call her daughter Gabi Borgo, Alex's mom, at 3 AM with news of a game or a baseball question. Gabi grew up a skier and while on the German Olympic team saw her career end after three weeks before the Innsbruck Olympics in 1964.
And how Brnardic's week that was went as he:

Four runs in a 16-2 romp over the Southwest Baptist in Durant. Brnardic homered, his fifth of the year and doubled twice, while scoring four times. Brnardic hit an RBI double in the first inning, hit a three-run homer to right in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.

Right-hander Brad Grieveson (senior, Creemore, Ont.) picked up the win, pitching five innings, allowing five hits and one run, while fanning two. Grieveson increased his record to 4-2.
One run in a 12-5 win over the Henderson State Reddies before 100 fans in the first game of a doubleheader at Arkadelphia. Brnardic doubled and singled twice.
Five runs in an 11-0 shutout over Henderson State in the nitecap. Brnardic homered twice, to climb to nine homers, as well as hitting a double. Right-hander Chris Johnson (junior, Edmonton, Alta.) wound up with the loss for the Reddies as he pitched five innings allowing six runs -- three earned -- while walking four and striking out three. In the doubleheader Brnardic hit .750 (6-for-8) with two home runs, two doubles, five runs scored and six RBIs.
Brnardic now ranks second on the Savages, batting .458 through 22 games. He ranks second in the league in RBI with 33 and third in the conference in home runs with nine.
