Ahh, WrestleMania. The showcase of the immortals. The granddaddy of them all. The Super Bowl of sports entertainment.
Ask any wrestler, and they\'ll tell you that there\'s something special about having a match at WrestleMania. While it can be argued that such a statement might just be hyperbole from WWF higher-ups, there is a certain aura surrounding the event, and for the 200-plus wrestlers who have fought on the biggest stage of them all, there are certainly a lot of memories.
In honour of these 200-plus \'rasslers who have graced the biggest stage of them all, we at SLAM! proudly present the WrestleMania Stat Sheet. Below you will find the full record of each wrestler\'s matches, broken down into wins, losses and draws.
First, however, a couple notes:
- Battle Royal participants have not been counted in this listing. This includes the NFL/WWF Battle Royal at WM2, the Battle Royal at WM4, the Tag-Team Battle Royal at WM14, the Hardcore Battle Royal at WM16 and the Gimmick Battle Royal at WM17.
- If a wrestler is disqualified in a match, it counts as a loss. If both competitors are DQ\'d, the match is considered a draw.
- If a wrestler fought in multiple matches on one card, they are counted individually. For example, Randy Savage fought four times at WM4 in the World Title tournament, and Maven fought in two Hardcore Title matches at WM18.
Now after breaking down the records of wrestlers, here are some of the highlights:
Match(es) of a lifetime
- 201 wrestlers have wrestled at WrestleMania. Of those, 86 wrestled only one WM match, while three have wrestled 12 matches.
- This year, Hulk Hogan will break the record he currently shares with Bret Hart and Randy Savage for most WrestleMania matches. Hogan will have wrestled 11 matches after this year\'s bout with Vince McMahon.
- Undertaker will be wrestling at his 11th WrestleMania, as will Hogan. The two share this record (Hogan wrestled two matches at WM9). Bret Hart is second with matches at 10 WM\'s (he wrestled two matches at WM10).
- Randy Savage holds the record for most matches at one WrestleMania with four (vs. Butch Reed, Greg Valentine, One Man Gang and Ted Dibiase).
- Some people are just born losers. Golddust (Dustin Runnels) is 0-4 at \'Mania.
- Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart share the record for most consecutive WrestleManias with a match at nine. Second is Tito Santana with eight. If you count Bret\'s two Battle Royals, however, then he stands alone with 13 consecutive WM appearances.
- He might have been middle-aged and crazy, but Terry Funk\'s return at WM14 established a record that will likely never be broken - longest length of time between matches. Between his first match (at WM2) and his second \'Mania, there were 10-events. No other wrestler has hit the decade mark, excluding various members of the Gimmick Battle Royal (counting those, Iron Sheik would have the record).
Title Talk
- Christian is currently on a three-year title-winning streak, winning the tag belts at 16 and 17, and the Hardcore title at 18. The streak can stay alive if he does not participate in this year\'s WrestleMania, or he suddenly gets inserted into a title program. He is the only wrestler to have won titles at three consecutive WrestleManias.
- Christian also shares the record for the most consecutive title victories at three. Demolition (Ax and Smash) won three WMs in a row, winning the tag-titles twice (vs. Strike Force at WM4 and vs. The Colossal Connection at WM6), and retaining one (vs. Powers of Pain/Mr. Fuji at WM5).
- One person who must be happy that the Intercontinental title is no longer active must be William Regal. His two WrestleMania matches were for the IC belt (vs. Chris Jericho at 17, Rob Van Dam at 18), both of which he lost.
- One person who is likely not happy about the title being dropped is The Rock. Two of his three wins were Intercontinental Title defences (at WM12 vs. The Sultan, at WM14 vs. Ken Shamrock).
- Rock has also lost an unprecedented three World Title matches, two to Steve Austin (WM15 and WM17) and one to Triple H (at WM16).
- The record for least amount of time between matches is co-held by Yokozuna and Spike Dudley. Both had matches immediately following their previous bout, with Yoko first beating Bret Hart at WM9 then losing to Hulk Hogan, while Spike beat Goldust and Maven for the Hardcore title at WM17, only to be drawn into a second match featuring The Hurricane, Al Snow and Crash.
WrestleMania 19\'s possibilities
- History is on Booker T\'s side at this year\'s WrestleMania. Six wrestlers have won the World title having lost the previous year, including Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, \"Stone Cold\" Steve Austin and Triple H.
- Bad news for Triple H, however. Only one wrestler won the title one year and made it to WrestleMania the next year defending the belt. That was Randy Savage, who won the title at WM4, and he lost the title to Hulk Hogan at WM5.
- Brock Lesnar\'s chances of winning the WWE title in his first WrestleMania are pretty good, based on history. Of the three wrestlers whose first-ever WM match was a World title bout, two won (Yokozuna beat Bret Hart at WM9, Diesel beat Shawn Michaels at WM12). The other, Sergeant Slaughter, lost his inaugural match to Hulk Hogan at WM7.
- There is some bad news for Team Angle this year. If their mentor has blazed the path for them, then they\'ll be losing their gold. Kurt Angle\'s triple-threat matches at WM16 were both losses, one of which was to Chris Benoit who will be teaming with Rhyno during the tag-team triple-threat.
Hello Ladies!
- Trish Stratus will try to avoid being the second female wrestler to lose both of her Women\'s Title matches at WM19. The first was Leilani Kai (lost at WM1 to Wendi Richter, at WM10 to Alundra Blayze).
- Along with Kai, two other women have had multiple WrestleMania matches. Luna Vachon wrestled two inter-gender matches (w/Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Doink/Dink at WM10, w/Goldust vs. Marc Mero/Sable at WM 14), while Sable wrestled one title match (vs. Tori at WM 15) and one inter-gender match (w/Marc Mero vs. Luna/Goldust at WM 14). This year, Trish Stratus and Jazz will join them.
- Chyna who? \"Mighty\" Molly Holly is the only female wrestler to win a men\'s title at a WrestleMania, winning the Hardcore Title from The Hurricane at WM17.
It\'s all about family
- There have only been two families that have had a father and a son compete at WrestleMania: Vince and Shane McMahon and Virgil (Dusty Rhodes) and Dustin (Goldust) Runnels.
- There have been four brothers who have wrestled at \'Manias: Bret and Owen Hart; Jacques and Raymond Rougeau; Dory Jr. and Terry Funk; and Sam (Tama) and Solofa (Rikishi/Sultan/Fatu) Fatu.
- Talk about brotherly love: Of the four brother sets listed above, only Bret and Owen have faced each other at a \'Mania.
Oh, Canada!
- Bret Hart, as should be a surprise to no one, has won the most WrestleMania matches of any Canadian at six. Owen Hart is second with five.
- Bret Hart has also lost the most WrestleMania matches (five). Second is a tie between Jacques Rougeau and Rick Martel with three each.
- Surprisingly, Earthquake has won the most matches without a loss of any Canadian with four. Edge is next with three. Pierre-Carl Ouelett is the only other undefeated Canadian at \'Mania (one win).
- Several Canadians, however, have not won a WrestleMania match. Tops among those are Raymond Rougeau, who failed to win at two \'Manias, while Trish Stratus and Val Venis are 0-1.
- Several Canadians have won title bouts at WrestleMania, including Bret Hart, Edge, Christian, Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Jacques Rougeau and Pierre-Carl Ouelett.
- There have also been several Canadians who have lost title bouts, including Bret Hart, Christian, Benoit, Jericho, Roddy Piper, Val Venis and Trish Stratus.
Miscellaneous
- Not included in the listings are Battle Royal participants. There have been five Battle Royals in WM history: WM2 (WWF vs. NFL - Andre the Giant winner); WM4 (Bad News Brown winner); WM14 (Tag-Team, Legion of Doom winners); WM16 (Hardcore, Hardcore Holly winner), and WM17 (Gimmick, Iron Sheik winner).
- Bret Hart, it should be noted, was the last man eliminated at WM2\'s and WM4\'s Battle Royals.
- Having Tito Santana on your tag-team is the proverbial kiss of death. Santana has seven WM losses (a record), of which four were tag-team matches: WM2 w/ JYD; WM3 w/ British Bulldogs; WM4 w/ Rick Martel; WM5 w/ Rick Martel.
- Bad News Brown is the only wrestler to have two draws in WrestleManias (vs. Jim Duggan at WM5, vs. Roddy Piper at WM6).
- Who has wrestled the most WrestleManias with the most gimmicks? Mick Foley, of course. Foley wrestled two \'Manias as Mankind (13 and 14), one as Cactus Jack (15) and one as Mick Foley (16).
