Phoenix to host WrestleMania XXVI
Bookmark and Share

First the Arizona Cardinals make the Super Bowl, and now the city of Glendale, Arizona will host wrestling's version of the Big Game next year -- WrestleMania XXVI.

The City of Glendale, Ariz., Global Spectrum and World Wrestling Entertainment announced today that WrestleMania XXVI will be at the University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday, March 28, 2010.

Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, Arizona Cardinals' coach Ken Whisenhunt and University of Phoenix Stadium general manager Peter Sullivan joined Vince McMahon and several WWE superstars in making the announcement at the stadium.

The WWE press release with the announcement was typically boastful:

"WWE’s annual pop-culture extravaganza is a coveted event for any major city. The pay-per-view event will be televised to more than 100 countries. WrestleMania XXIV pumped $50 million into the local Orlando economy in 2008 and set the Citrus Bowl attendance record with 74,635 fans from all 50 states, five Canadian provinces and 21 countries," it read.

The Fan Axxess show, WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, a WrestleManiArt exhibition and a WrestleMania "Rocks the Block" street party are mentioned in the press release. Monday Night Raw will also be televised from the same market the day after WrestleMania.

The University of Phoenix stadium was chosen after a year long bid process. This marks the first time the Glendale/Phoenix area has hosted WrestleMania. The last time WrestleMania was that far west was WrestleMania 21 in Los Angeles.
