Order The Best of Saturday Nights Main Event DVD Set

I remember anxiously getting up Sunday mornings and rushing downstairs, hoping that something hadnít gone wrong in my attempt to program my VCR. After a quick rewind to make sure it was there, I would go to the beginning of the tape and watch Saturday Nightís Main Event unfold.

It was those memories that popped into my mind when it was first announced that The Best of Saturday Nightís Main Event would be coming to DVD. Iíve been eagerly anticipating this set since that announcement, and the day I received it I was like a kid in Disneyland.

While some will choose to watch the set in order, I instead went back to relive some of my favorite matches from when I first started watching, including the first SNME match I watched -- Hulk Hogan vs. The Big Boss Man in a Steel Cage. Some of my favorite wrestling moments from my youth are on this disc -- Mr. Perfect and The Genius smashing the WWE Championship and later teaming up against Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior, The Rockers vs. The Hart Foundation, and Ted Dibiase vs. Bret Hart.

I then went back and watched some of the angles and moments that up until this DVD I had only heard of and seen clips. The formation and disintegration of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage as The Mega Powers. Hogan vs. Paul Orndorff in a cage. Of course, this set would be incomplete without Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant from The Main Event in prime time in February 1988, a match that saw evil crooked referee Earl Hebner sub out for his brother Dave and cost Hogan the title, which Andre immediately turned over to Ted Dibiase.

Most of the matches on the set are under 10 minutes, which makes it an easy watch. While some of the matches arenít as action packed as what we see today, there is some quality stuff on here.

The three discs left me wanting more. I recall screaming in horror as The Brain Busters upended my favorite tag team Demolition for the tag team championship in July 1989. That match isnít included. Sadly, Demolition is completely ignored in the set; matches against The Rockers, Ultimate Warrior & The Legion of Doom, The Hart Foundation, or The British Bulldogs would have made a nice addition. I recently read results from the shows and what is amazing is not only how much great stuff is on this set, but how many matches that amazed me then are not included.

The Best of Saturday Nightís Main Event will appeal to a broad spectrum of wrestling fan. Those that are disenchanted with the current product will love the flashback to the wrestling they loved. Those who have only become fans in the last few years will get a major history lesson. Overall, this is a damn fine set, one that belongs in any fanís collection.
