Countdown to TNA Destination X
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
TNA's annual homage to the X Division goes live Sunday with Destination X on pay-per-view from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Fla. In addition to a bevy of X Division matches on the show to crown a new champion, the TNA World Heavyweight Championship is on the line when Bobby Roode defends against Austin Aries. Let's take a look at what should be an outstanding show.
TNA World Heavyweight Championship: Bobby Roode vs. Austin Aries
Austin Aries gets his chance to play with the big boys here as he vacates his X Division Championship for a chance to win the world title. But he has a big task in front of him in the longest reigning TNA World Heavyweight Champion in company history, Bobby Roode.
Roode's title reign has been fantastic. He has been getting better each and every week and has really taken his game to the next level. With Roode making a statement at the top of the card, Aries has been doing the exact same thing elsewhere and this should make for a terrific match.
If these two get 20 minutes, this could be one of the better matches of the year. Even though Aries is on a roll, it's definitely not time for Roode to be losing the title, especially on what amounts to a "B show." This should be fun.
Bound For Glory Series: Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe
What's unfortunate about this is, at max, we'll only get 15 minutes because it's a BFG Series match. Regardless, this should be a barnburner, as it is each and every time these two get in the ring together. Expect a hard-hitting match here that could go to the time-limit draw. After stumbling through the BFG Series last year, Joe has been on a roll this year and has moved into the No. 2 slot this year behind James Storm.
Angle on pay-per-view always delivers and this should be no different, especially with Joe on the other side of the ring.
Last Man Standing: AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels
Regardless of what you think of the angle these two are involved in, these two, like Angle and Joe, always deliver. The intensity should be off the charts in this one, as Styles has been bringing it as of late in this storyline.
Daniels has been enjoying a career renaissance during this storyline, working great matches and showing tremendous personality. You'd expect Styles to win this one, but it more than likely furthers the storyline if Daniels picks up the win here using nefarious means.
Tournament to crown new X Division Champion
We've got seven announced participants — Douglas Williams, Kid Kash, Zema Ion, Flip Cassanova, Kenny King, Rashad Cameron and Sonjay Dutt. The eighth man will be the winner of the Last Chance Fourway between Dakota Darsow, Rubix, Lars Only and Mason Andrews.
We don't have any matches announced as of press time, but there will be four matches with the winners advancing to an Ultimate X Match to crown a new X Division Champion.
Without match-ups, it's tough to predict this, but if the company wanted to make a splash, King would be an interesting winner considering the controversy of him appearing in TNA. Outside of that, Sonjay Dutt really impressed in his match with Rubix and then Williams, who has been criminally underused, is another good choice, but it's tough to see him winning an Ultimate X match.
Kid Kash is an interesting pick, but it's really tough to see any of these guys winning it. Let's go with Dutt to win the championship.
