Countdown to WWE Night of the Champions
By JON WALDMAN -- SLAM! Wrestling
The Night of Champions is upon us and there's a decent amount of intrigue to
carry the show. Unfortunately, the most interesting match does not involve a
title belt.
The WWE booking team has painted Del Rio as a cowardly heel champ which goes much the cockiness that brought him to the dance. The expectation is, thus, that ADR gets his comeuppance and Cena goes over; however, the true expectation is that this feud runs until at least the Survivor Series where we focus Cena back to his pending 'Mania match with The Rock. Ergo, Cena loses and definitely not cleanly.
Henry's on the roll of his life and definitely there is a sense that you need to strike while the iron is hot with him. I can't see any way that WWE doesn't give him the title tonight and pushes this feud along.
There have been some interesting theories presented online - Punk and Nash are in cahoots and will re-form the nWo, Trips and Nash are playing this all as a ruse and the Johnny Ace theory have all flown pretty well. The bottom line, however, is that WWE needs to end this feud quickly before Triple H, who has become babyface teflon, kills Punk's momentum as the new fan favorite; so look for a returning Vince McMahon to take out Trips and cause him to lose the match.
A-Ri and JoMo are pretty much afterthoughts here. The real intrigue is between Swagger and Ziggler, with the question of which screws the other more in the bout. It wouldn't shock me if Swagger ends up with the title while Vickie announced him officially being part of her stable in an effort to keep the belt "in the family."
Please let this be the end of the abominable Kelly Kelly title run.
I get the feeling Miz and Truth will have a longer pursuit of the titles than just one show as WWE needs to continue building Air Boom. Take the faces to win. Visit the SLAM! Wrestling store! Get the best of WWE's PPVs in the SLAM! Wrestling Store!
