Countdown to WWE Over The Limit
By JON WALDMAN -- SLAM! Wrestling
We're just a few weeks removed from Extreme Rules and now we're headed straight to our next PPV - Over the Limit.
Immediately after the close of Raw, I had a feeling that we were going to get the Mick Foley finish from Royal Rumble over a decade back. Foley himself seems to agree with me. I'm going to take Miz here with the pre-recorded screaming by Cena blaring over the loudspeaker.
If we're retreading one gimmick from the past, why not make it two? I get the feeling Christian loses here and goes insane, KO'ing Randy post-match. Then, with the mentality of if he can't have it no one can, Christian takes the belt back stage and, in a variance from the famous Mr. Perfect spot, smashes the belt up with a hammer, which leads to the much speculated debut of a new title.
WWE has started to tease that Mason Ryan is headed away from Nexus, but I think it's way too early for that. I can see Ryan and Punk, in another retread, going the Diesel/Shawn Michaels split path a couple months down the road; they'll need the tag belts to start that journey off though, and they get them here.
This is example #1 of a feud being rushed to PPV too early. Barrett needs to continue being built as champ before he loses the title, but I get the feeling WWE will hotshot the belt over to Zeke.
And here's example #2. Kelly and Brie had one match to establish this "feud", and the real result was the intrigue with Kharma and Kelly. WWE seems to be headed to a feud between the latter two, which necessitates a title switch tonight.
Example #3. This one will likely be match of the night, with Cara going over. Chavo really should've been established more.
I loved that Cole brought up the Hart vs. Lawler match from nearly two decades ago. I'm actually not going to be shocked if Bret makes an appearance here. Lawler puts this baby to sleep, finally.
This is the match that will establish whether or not Truth is truly ready for the heel spotlight. He needs to hurt Rey in all sorts of crazy ways, lose the match, then go postal. Rey wins the battle, but Truth wins the war. Visit the SLAM! Wrestling store! Get the best of WWE's PPVs in the SLAM! Store!
