Countdown to WWE Over The Limit
|

|
I'm not exactly sure why Over the Limit was chosen as a new Pay Per View name
for WWE, especially since nothing here rings true to that name.
I guess that the implication is we're set for an adrenaline-driven, all-out
rush as we venture through tonight's card; but to me, there are much better
names for PPVs like Judgment Day that WWE has already been using.
It seems inevitable that WWE will use this spot from here on in to be a placeholder
PPV until we can start developing the stories for Summerslam come June. I don't
think the feuds we have here tonight will go much beyond Over the Limit, and if they do
they'll more than likely be wrapped up in June.
Despite that, there are some good matches to look forward to. Let's take a
look.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Big Show vs. Jack Swagger |
|
The idea here, seemingly, is to make Swagger look that much more serious as
champ before he inevitably gets fed to 'Taker in the summer. I don't mind this
bout much since Show is again being used properly - as a mammoth man who is
seemingly unbeatable. If Swagger can pull off the gutwrench powerbomb, it would
be the singlemost impressive feat of strength and skill that I've seen in years,
and somehow I think WWE's going to try to make that work in run-throughs tomorrow
afternoon. If it's not possible (which it likely isn't), look for Swagger to
debut a submission move to put Show away.
WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH (I Quit)
Batista vs. John Cena |
How many more times can we see Cena beat Batista? I loved their work when they
started a few months back, but the feud is stale now. If Batista is indeed on
his way out, then this will be his swan song; but I get the feeling Big Dave's
going to get creative with audio a la Rock/Mick Foley to extend the feud for
one more month, with a major blow-off next month (3 Stages of Hell comes to
mind).
|
INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH
Kofi Kingston vs. Drew MacIntyre |
|
I actually don't mind the way the build to this match was executed. Drew is
the kind of guy you can easily hate and his ring work is passable. I feel, though,
that if Kofi doesn't win here his stock will plummet and he'll end up being
the 2010 version of Shelton Benjamin. Kofi needs the belt more than Drew does,
so hopefully he will win.

GRUDGE MATCH (Head Shave vs. Straight Edge Society Pledge
Match)
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk |
|
The logic here is that Punk, after having his hair spared last month, loses
it here. The teased dissension from Luke Gallows and Serena adds an interesting layer,
as does the hooded Straight Edge Society member. Let's remember though that Rey was also an Latino World Order
member and brought the group down from the inside in a very well done angle
in WCW. I can see WWE doing that here, with Rey losing on purpose to infiltrate
the Society and further develop the mistrust in the leader, CM Punk.

GRUDGE MATCH
Randy Orton vs. Edge |
|
This is one feud I expect to continue past tonight. It seems odd to have both
of these guys, who should be getting big pushes, to feud with one another, and
I get the feeling Edge wins here by nefarious means. Hopefully that doesn't
kill Orton's heat. I suspect a Loser Leaves Raw match will take place next month
to move Edge back to Smackdown where he belongs.

UNIFIED TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH
Chris Jericho/The Miz vs. Hart Dynasty |
|
The logic here would be giving Jericho and Miz the titles to keep them on both
shows, but without the belts I fear that the Dynasty's days are numbered. Take
the Harts here.
| |
DIVAS TITLE MATCH
Eve vs. Maryse |
|
The Raw women's ranks have been depleted and are desperately in need of new
blood. Eve's shown flashes of real ring acumen but the writers aren't getting
behind her enough. I suspect that Natalya will get into the title mix soon,
so look for Maryse to get her title back.
| |
GRUDGE MATCH
R-Truth vs. Ted DiBiase |
|
I like Virgil coming back as long as it's a short run to establish DiBiase's
evolved character. Truth does nothing here for me though. Take DiBiase to win
with a touch of humiliation to Truth - the money stuffed down his throat to
put him out of action for a couple months.
