Countdown to TNA Destination X
By SLAM! Wrestling staff
For a few weeks, all was quiet on the wrestling front on Sundays. Now, we have
back-to-back pay-per-views on our hands kiddies, starting tonight with Destination
X.
True to its name, the high-flying daredevils of TNA get a good share of the
spotlight on a PPV that has had some good focus, yet still faces the reality
that it's an extension of the weekly television show, rather than the destination
point for fans. We'll see more wrestling tonight than we get on an average broadcast,
but the ultimate question becomes whether anything we see will be memorable,
and for the most part TNA PPVs of late have been unable to produce that sentiment.
Let's see if the trend reverses tonight.
|
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Abyss vs. AJ Styles |
|
Jon's Pick
I really haven't been able to enjoy this feud for two reasons. First, we already
have next month's PPV main event (and title challenger) waiting in the wings,
the ending seems inevitable; and second and more importantly, I just can't buy
into this storyline at all. This is EvaD Sullivan v.2 and whoever thought that
the first story was worth repeating needs to give their head a good shake. Seriously
-- in the annals of garbage we've been force fed over the years, the Sullivan
angle ranks as one of the worst, and this abomination about the power of a ring
(a WWE ring nonetheless) is going to rank high on said list as well. AJ wins
and hopefully moves past this crap.
#1 TAG TEAM CONTENDERS MATCH (Ultimate
X)
Generation Me vs. Motor City Machine Guns |
Jon's Pick
I'll admit to being a huge fan of the MCMG right off the bat and have a feeling
they're going to be amazing here. I'm not sold yet, however, on G-Me, who seem
to be starting to be built as TNA's version of the Hardyz (SoCal Val in the
Lita spot would be an interesting fit. Just saying...). There's something a
bit too generic about them so far here, but I'll give them some time. I expect
a strong match here, but can't see G-Me taking this, no way, no how.
|
GLOBAL TITLE MATCH
Rob Terry vs. Brutus Magnus |
|
Jon's Pick
I don't mind Terry but he should not be holding a title. I'd suspect that Magnus
wins, but honestly, I just couldn't care about this bout.
| |
X DIVISION TITLE MATCH
Doug Williams vs. Shannon Moore |
|
Jon's Pick
Maybe I've been too cynicized by WWE TV, but I honestly can't buy Shannon Moore
as a title threat here. Williams has a lot of momentum and the Rolling German
Suplex may be the best finishing move in TNA today. I can't see how Moore take
the W here, but I'm afraid he will.
| |
TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH
Hernandez/Matt Morgan vs. Beer Money |
|
Jon's Pick
I'm liking the prospect of the Guns versus Beer Money. Hernandez and Morgan
haven't gelled all that well as a team so I'm going to say the titles come off
tonight.
| |
GRUDGE MATCH
Kurt Angle vs. Mr. Anderson |
|
Jon's Pick
I've enjoyed the build on this one, but why Mr. Anderson is portrayed as a non-patriot
baffles me. I think he needs the good ol' Shieky boots. Feud doesn't end here
kiddies. Angle wins by DQ.
| |
KNOCKOUTS TITLE MATCH
Tara vs. Daffney |
|
Jon's Pick
I'm really enjoying this feud and moreso liking how Daffney is getting a good-sized
push for seemingly the first time in her career... anywhere. I suspect there
will be a title change just to further the feud, but this one isn't done, not
by a longshot.
| |
CONTRACT MATCH
Eric Young/Kevin Nash vs. The Band |
|
Jon's Pick
The build here has been decent, but I can't say I care about Waltman and Hall
with a straight face. It seems inevitable that Nash turns on Young here, which
is really unfortunate since I thought the two had good chemistry as a team.
The Band wins.
| |
#1 X-DIVISION TITLE CONTENDER MATCH (Ladder
Match)
Daniels vs. Kaz vs. Amazing Red vs. Brian Kendrick |
|
Jon's Pick
This one's a pick-em. Just about anyone could come out on top here, though I'd
say Kendrick has the least chance of anyone in the match. I'm going to be curious
to see how the men involved perform and expect the usual spotfest, but nothing
too memorable will come about.
