Countdown to Survivor Series
By SLAM! Wrestling Staff

I agree with Chris Jericho - WWE fans are hypocrites.

How can I say this? Look at the masses who ripped on the Fed for having recent PPVs with the same gimmick in multiple matches at PPVs like Hell in a Cell. Yet, many of these same fans are more than happy to take three bouts of five-person team elimination matches tonight.

Just because a gimmick has been around a long time doesn't mean that it's any more forgivable than another, especially when none of the bouts have had any build-up based on the type of match that we're seeing tonight.

Bottom line - widen the paintbrush guys and gals, because Survivor Series is just as much an overdone gimmick as the others if you're going to take that perspective.

Putting that aside, the matches that we have before us tonight are pretty intriguing, so let's take a closer look.

WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH (Triple Threat)

John Cena vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

I recall a few months back that there had been a tease of HBK turning heel, and this may be where it starts. I could see HHH having the cover, only for Michaels to pull him off and get the duke instead. At first, both men say it's because of Shawn's competitive nature but it builds to a full heel turn in the Rumble.

Kenai Andrews

As DX has been fond of saying, the odds are against Cena, but can DX actually cover the spread? I think not, as Hunter accidentally sabotages Shawn during the match or vice-versa and Cena retains, possibly planting the seed for a DX breakup down the road, maybe at Wrestlemania.

Andy McNamara

Cena will be double teamed initially with the interest coming in how and when HBK and HHH will turn on one another. From my view I hope and pray this is the beginning of the DX breakup as they are simply put…LAME!!! Cena keeps the title after some D-Generation X bickering allows him to capitalize.

WORLD TITLE MATCH (Triple Threat)

Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho vs. Big Show

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

Kane's getting involved here somehow, I just can't figure out if it's as a face or a heel. I'm thinking he helps his brother keep his belt and then puts in the screws after the match to build to an Armageddon title bout as a holdover.

  GRUDGE MATCH

Rey Mysterio vs. Dave Batista

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

On three... one... two... three... Dave's gonna kill you! Dave's gonna kill you! This will likely be a bout chock full of destruction, with Rey getting a fluke pin to either a) advance the feud or b) lead to an even worse post-match beatdown if indeed Mysterio needs to take time off.

Andy McNamara

Though I like the story behind this one, I'm not sure I’d want to see either lose convincingly. So I predict some sort of non-finish – a double DQ or countout.

Kenai Andrews

I’m not sure about this one, but the match won’t get over without Rey taking a beating. There are also rumors that Rey will be working injured. Batista is not JBL, so I cannot see Mysterio going over cleanly and early in this program. He could win by DQ accordingly, but my money is on a Batista squash.

SURVIVOR SERIES ELIMINATION MATCH

Team Kingston vs. Team Orton

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

Of the two men's Survivor matches, this one has had more build-up. I could really see this go either way. Under normal circumstances I'd say that Legacy are the survivors here, but I'm guessing Kofi eliminates Orton. I'll take DiBiase as the sole survivor.

Kenai Andrews

It’s all about Kofi and Orton. Mr. Kingston has had the upper hand for quite a while now. What goes up must come down, at least for a little while anyways. Does Orton gain a measure of revenge or does DiBiase step out from Orton’s shadow, costing them the match? Orton wins.

Andy McNamara

Too bad that Punk is being so under utilized in this Survivor Series, but there’s only so much show time right? Kingston has been coming on strong so I will select Kofi’s team to win the tradition SS match up in order to push a big singles war between him and Orton.

SURVIVOR SERIES ELIMINATION MATCH

Team Miz vs. Team Morrison

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

As much as anything, this is good scouting for the Money in the Bank match. Seamus and Drew have a lot to gain and I expect both to get an elimination before being DQ'd. Ultimately though, this has to come down to Miz vs. Morrison, and the Shaman of Sexy gets the duke to even up their series, leading to the rubber match at 'Mania.

Kenai Andrews

Sheamus and Swagger stand to benefit from a win more than anyone else in this match, so I’ll side with Team Miz.

Andy McNamara

These two former tag team champion team captains square off for bragging rights. This is pretty much a pick’em, but I have a feeling The Miz’s team will pick up the “W” to give the annoying heel a nice push heading into the end of the year.

SURVIVOR SERIES ELIMINATION MATCH

Team Mickie vs. Team McCool

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

While the build-up of McCool vs. Mickie has been mostly solid, Friday night's antics were just too much. You almost hope that Mickie's team gets the sweep here, but I can see a token elimination.

Kenai Andrews

Other than Wrestlemania, Survivor Series relies on strength of character more than any over pay-per-view to sell their traditional-style matches. How many of the Divas in this matchup have been adequately built up this year in WWE to allow this match to stand on its own two feet? That's a story for another day though. Alicia has been winning, so I’ll go for Team Mickie changing things up and getting the win.

Andy McNamara

Another traditional Survivor Series match that could swing either way with no major impact to either team captain. General sloppiness will be theme so cross your fingers that the Divas get eliminated quickly. Flip a coin and lets go with the good guys…girls.
