Countdown to WWE Bragging Rights
By SLAM! Wrestling Staff
WWE's latest PPV concept is an old fashioned war of the worlds gimmick. In
build up Bragging Rights, we've seen a couple formats juggled around, but the
current "best of three" series seems to be the best. This way, 11
Superstars and Divas from each show get the payday aside from the most important
titles on each brand.
It does, however, point out just how meaningless ECW is in the big picture.
No wonder their ratings are so low.
This should be an interesting night to say the least, especially with the formats
of the two title matches. Let's take a closer look.
| GRUDGE MATCH (14-man tag team)
Team Smackdown vs. Team Raw
Too many guys for one match. Could they not have saved this for Survivor Series,
where it's elimination style? I can't see this coming down to anything but almost
all the guys brawling, leaving two behind, and if that's the case it's Jericho
and HBK, leading to a Big Show "turn" on Raw, giving Smackdown the
Well, after DX verbally buried the first Smackdown team on RAW the other day,
it's good thing they switched up the teams. Putting the idea in viewers
heads that its not even worth knowing the names of the companys
up-and-comers hardly makes them want to pay money to see those guys. Really,
what purpose did that serve WWE on the larger scale? The only good thing about
it is that bringing in the Hart Dynasty makes it better on paper than it was
before. Even then, though, the star power of DX makes it seem like a lock that
Jericho and Triple H should be the focus and it will come down to the two captains.
A lot of bodies to get into this one so it could look sloppy since everyone
has to get their couple of minutes. Raw is the flagship show and shall reign
supreme over little brother Smackdown.
| WORLD TITLE MATCH (Fatal 4-Way)
Batista vs. Undertaker vs. Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk
It's scary how much pain 'Taker is in these days. I'm guessing McMahon gets
the screws in here somehow, leading to one of the others taking the belt. The
logical move would be for Punk or Batista to take the strap, so I'll go with
the big man since he has the new DVD out.
While I understand why they would have Taker win back the belt in Hell in the
Cell, to me it shouldnt have happened. Punk was doing great as champion,
and there were lots of potential feud possibilities for him. I think the three
good guys start brawling amongst themselves, letting Punk back-door his way
back to the win.
Cross your fingers that Batista is kept on the outside for the most part so
that we get to see some solid athletic displays. Taker should retain, but look
for this to build to a grand finale rematch between Punk and Undertaker at Survivor
|| WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH (No Holds Barred
Randy Orton vs. John Cena
Well, we know that John Cena can go for an hour (as he did with HBK a few years
back), but Orton's a bit unproven. This could be the match that makes Randy's
career truly legen... wait for it... dary, or exposes him. I'm taking Cena since
there's no way he's moving from Raw.
If they can change the tag match at the last minute, why not this one? They
should swap John Cena for Shawn Michaels, and Randy Orton for Chris Jericho.
The no-DQ stipulation suggests that Orton will be relying on Legacy to help
him out. Look for DiBiase to refuse to help (building off the great face-turn
tease from RAW), and cost Orton a critical win, letting Cena take the match.
Orton will have the hour in him, but does Cena have what it take to work an
interesting style for 60 minutes? To compensate I'm sure we'll see blood and
plunder galore. Each superstar will grab a couple of wins each with Cena hitting
an FU in the final seconds to take the win.
|| GRUDGE MATCH
John Morrison vs. The Miz
This feud has been golden. Morrison and Miz are like Edge and Christian -- good
friends, better enemies. If I had the book, I'd take advantage of the time of
year and end this with a win by Morrison, then have Mizzy Jannetty come out
on Raw tomorrow with the old Rockers music playing. Let that run for a couple
weeks, building up to Miz saying he can create better teams than Morrison. The
two then form their teams for Survivor Series.
Though I like the story behind this one, I'm not sure Id want to see either
champion lose convincingly. So I predict some sort of non-finish a double
DQ or countout.
A battle of old partners to decide who is the true Marty Janetty of the group!
This should be one of the top matches of the evening as both men ooze charisma
in different ways. Morrison has main event written all over him for 2010 so look
for him to shut The Miz up.
GRUDGE MATCH (Six Women Tag Team)
Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown
Feh. Only thing to look forward to here is Beth Phoenix turning on Michelle
Yawn. A big who cares from me on this one. Flip a coin. I'll take Smackdown.
