Micki & Maude (1984)
By DAVE HILLHOUSE -- SLAM! Wrestling

Amy Irving, Hard Boiled Haggerty and Dudley Moore

Starring: Dudley Moore, Amy Irving, Ann Reinking, Richard Mulligan
Written by: Jonathan Reynolds
Directed by: Blake Edwards

There are some heavy hitters at work in Micki & Maude, and I'm not referring to the likes of Hard Boiled Haggerty or Andre the Giant. Blake Edwards (The Great Race,The Pink Panther) and Dudley Moore (10, Arthur) are not the type of director and actor that simply fill those roles as a means to push across a vehicle for someone else. They are the show, and rightfully so, as both still had substantial drawing power in 1984.

It was efforts such as Micki & Maude, however, that were spelling the end of those days of standing in the movie industry. Mixed reviews usually leaned towards the negative, and the film has not considered to have aged well. It's a unique time capsule, though, of an era in wrestling and mainstream entertainment just prior to Rock N' Wrestling 's explosion. Along with Haggerty and Andre, the film features Big John Studd, Wildman Jack Armstrong and Chief Jay Strongbow. It's Haggarty playing Maude's father that introduces the wrestling element, and he's exactly the type of father-in-law that most men have nightmares about.

The story is a classic farce that follows Rob Salinger (Moore) as he struggles to keep a marriage and hopes for children alive between both his and his wife Micki's (Reinking) full time jobs. Salinger meets Maude (Irving), and in a "sweet love story" twist you can't away with as easily anymore, falls for her as well and ends up marrying both women, both pregnant. Hijinks, as they say, ensue, and it's a slapstick-filled chase to resolve the relationships for the grand finale.
