WWE Studios latest vehicle for John Cena promises to be yet another shoot 'em up, action packed bloodbath. The new film he stars in, 12 Rounds, has Cena playing a detective who has to rescue his girlfriend from dangerous criminals. If this sounds like a typo, it isn't: in his first film for the WWE, The Marine, Cena played a character who had to rescue his wife from dangerous criminals. Being a WWE backed film, the recycling of a money-making idea isn't too surprising.

In fact, 12 Rounds might be considered somewhat of a loose sequel to The Marine, with its similar plot line. WWE made the right choice, however, by calling the king of sequel directing, Renny Harlin, to helm it. The most experienced director to have worked for the WWE thus far, Harlin directed the highest grossing sequel in the Nightmare on Elm Street series of films, Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and arguably the best sequel in the Die Hard series of films, Die Hard 2: Die Harder.

"I wanted this film to have a visual style that complemented John’s athleticism,” Harlin explained to WWE.com. "But instead of portraying him as a superhero, we’ve made him an everyman."

Aside from Cena, the rest of the cast is notable for appearing in films playing second fiddle to The Rock: Ashley Scott, who plays Cena's kidnapped damsel-in-distress, starred in Walking Tall, while Brian J. White, who plays another detective in this film, starred with The Brahma Bull in The Game Plan.

12 Rounds is scheduled to be released in theatres on March 27, 2009 -- no coincidence, it can be assumed, a week before Wrestlemania XXV. Expect the film to be promoted heavily in relation to the Pay Per View.
