Josh Mathews released by WWE
By JON WALDMAN -- SLAM! Wrestling

With Black Thursday still fresh in the minds of wrestling fans, WWE made another roster cut announcement as broadcaster Josh Mathews has been released.

Mathews had been one of WWE's longest serving employees, first coming to the company in 2001 amid the first season of Tough Enough. Not chosen for a WWE contract during the competition, Mathews went to the independent wrestling scene, most notably appearing as part of the short-lived XWF.

Mathews became a full time employee of WWE in 2002, moving behind the mic first on syndicated programming such as Velocity and as a backstage interviewer on SmackDown. Mathews would grow within the company and eventually gain a seat at the commentating desk, first with SmackDown and later with ECW and NXT. Eventually, Mathews made his way to Raw and spent a fair amount of time as play-by-play lead, particularly during an angle between Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler.

Mathews would later return to his backstage position where he spent the majority of his time over the last couple years, along with doing play-by-play for the short lived Saturday Morning Slam!. He also hosted a number of WWE web-based broadcasts.

During his run in WWE, Mathews twice stepped into the ring. The first was in a tag team match with Booker T against JBL and Orlando Jordan, and later in a singles bout with Jordan.
