Jim Ross announces retirement

According to WWE.com, Jim Ross has decided to retire from World Wrestling Entertainment after 20 years with the company.

The report says that it is effective today, and that Ross plans to pursue other business interests.

Ross still calls Oklahoma home and sells a collection of barbecue sauces, condiments and jerky.

Before being hired by WWE, Ross worked as a referee and all around go-boy in the Mid-South territory, run then by Leroy McGuirk and Bill Watts. It was in Mid-South where he found fame as an announcer.

Later, he moved to the NWA/World Championship Wrestling, where he rose into management and on the booking committee.

Ross was hired by WWE and debuted at WrestleMania in 1993 as an announcer. He eventually was a vice president, in charge of talent relations.

"Jim has made many contributions to WWE and the sports-entertainment industry, and we thank him for his many years of service and wish him well," reads the WWE.com report.
