WWE Main Event: Surging Axel and Rhodes collide

Fresh off a devastating beating of CM Punk, WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel has put his name on the radar with a helping hand from his manager, Paul Heyman. Tonight on WWE Main Event, Axel looks to capture the thunder of another superstar on a hot streak, Cody Rhodes. Additionally, Fandango takes on the high-flying Kofi Kingston. All that and more on this week's edition of WWE Main Event!

We are on tape from Las Vegas, Nev. Josh Mathews and Alex Riley have the call for this week.

Match One: Curtis Axel (w/Paul Heyman) vs. Cody Rhodes

Lockup starts the match and Curtis Axel nails an arm drag. Lockup again leads to Axel nabbing a side headlock takeover, but Cody Rhodes with continual headscissors counters. Side headlock now in for Axel again. Rhodes sends him off the ropes and Axel with a shoulder bump. Axel looking for a hip toss, but Rhodes with a fireman's carry to reset the action. Side headlock into an ankle pick takedown for Axel is countered into a hammerlock by Rhodes. Rhodes driving the knee into the spine and turns Axel over for a nearfall.

Axel up to his feet, but Rhodes sweeps the leg. Quickly ducking to the outside, Axel consults with Paul Heyman to regroup. Axel taking his time to return to the ring as Rhodes taunts him.

Return to the ring leads to a lockup. Rhodes sent into the corner, where he floats over into a schoolboy rollup for a close nearfall. Axel taking the momentum from Rhodes with clubbing blows to the back. Right hand to the head drops Rhodes and he is sent tumbling to the floor after a clothesline to the back of the head. Axel following up outside, but Rhodes runs him into the apron and unloads a brutal chop. Too overzealous, Rhodes gets his whip reversed and careens into the barricade with some velocity as we hit our first break.

We return with Axel grabbing a quick nearfall on Rhodes. Reverse chinlock with some crossfacing with the forearm is applied by Axel. Rhodes fighting up to his feet and hits an arm drag to get out, but Axel with a clothesline counter to stifle Rhodes. Rhodes on the apron and Axel roughing him up. A right hand from Rhodes allows him to move up top, only to be arm dragged down by Axel for a nearfall. Dropkick followup also grabs a nearfall for Axel.

On all fours, Rhodes is on the wrong end of many elbow drops to the back of the head. A cornered Rhodes with right hand counters, but Axel sends him chest-first into the turnbuckle for a brief pin attempt before unloading more striking offense. Scoop slam and an axehandle smash to the chest from the top gets another nearfall.

Reverse chinlock once again applied. Rhodes attempting to wiggle out of the hold to no avail. Rhodes makes his way to the feet and sends Axel away with a whip. Axel slides and nails Rhodes with a forearm shiver to the back of the head for a nearfall.

Running knee attempt is countered by Rhodes. Mule kick counter in the corner by Rhodes gets him a moonsault crossbody before sending Axel outside. Inside, Rhodes unloading a furious series of clotheslines. Punt to the lower abdomen and groin connects as Axel is draped on the ropes. Disaster Kick is ducked and Axel looking for the Perfectplex. Rhodes twists out and hits an Alabama Slam for a nearfall.

Rhodes with the side headlock and Axel ragdolls Rhodes into a Saito Suplex for a nearfall. Up top, Axel is crotched for being too slow. Rhodes with a Kinniku Buster after hoisting Axel up in the air. Axel barely gets his shoulder up on the nearfall.

Axel hanging on to the apron to prevent Rhodes from dragging him inside. A thrust kick to the knee and the head lead to the Axelizer.

Winner by pinfall: Curtis Axel

Match Two: The Prime Time Players vs. The Real Americans (w/Zeb Colter)

Darren Young starts off with Antonio Cesaro. Cesaro muscles Young into the corner, but Young fights out with headbutts and punches. Clothesline nearfall from Young leads to Titus O'Neil being brought in. Young sent into Cesaro in a splash and O'Neil with the scoop slam.

Young brought in once again with a fist drop to the head. Cesaro with some cheeky offense and he sends Young into and over the turnbuckles. Jack Swagger tagged in and he clotheslines Young back down on the floor. Inside, Swagger nabs a nearfall.

Surfboard stretch across the back of Young leads to an armlock for Swagger. Young fighting out and he hits a sunset flip for a nearfall. Swagger rams Young into the corner. The referee breaking up the commotion allows Cesaro to land a hard lariat from the apron. Swagger Bomb followed up by Cesaro leapfrogging Swagger for a double stomp to the chest. Young again on the floor with Cesaro. Cesaro with the Karelin lift and gutwrench powerbomb.

Swagger with a belly-to-belly throw before bringing Cesaro back in for a double-team STO for a nearfall. Cesaro keeping Young grounded with a reverse chinlock. A cornered Young fights off both Real Americans and tries to sneak a tag, but Cesaro grabs the leg. Enzuigiri drops Cesaro.

Swagger and O'Neil now in. Clothesline after clothesline lead to a fallaway slam from O'Neil. Big boot to the face of Swagger gets a nearfall. Swagger ducking under the turnbuckles to consult with Zeb Colter. Cesaro attempts dirty offense, but O'Neil stuns him with a strike. Swagger from behind with a powerful wrestling takedown for a nearfall that is broken by Young.

Cesaro dropkicks Young out to the apron and Swagger and O'Neil are left. Clash of the Titus lands on Swagger.

Match Three: Kofi Kingston vs. Fandango (w/Summer Rae)

Lockup and Fandango with a snapmare into a reverse chinlock. Kofi Kingston with a hammerlock counter that resets the action. Kingston grabs the side headlock and grabs a hammerlock into a schoolboy for a nearfall.

Kingston returns to the side headlock attack. Fandango turning out into a side headlock of his own. Shoulder bump and Fandango off the ropes, only to be leapfrogged and ducked into a corkscrew forearm from Kingston for a nearfall.

Left arm is isolated by Kingston, who drops knees into the elbow joint. Keylock applied now and Fandango is feeling it in a bad way. Closed fist strikes allow Fandango to fight out. Monkey flip attempt by Fandango sees Kingston using his cat-like reflexes to land on his feet and get a monkey flip of his own. Fandango moves to the apron and Kingston slides under Fandango to pull him down on the apron. Fandango attempts some offense, but Kingston flutters to the apron to land a springboard crossbody.

Summer Rae walks Kingston down temporarily outside, distracting him enough to allow Fandango to land an armbreaker from the apron on the opposite side of the ring. Kingston sent into the ring post by Fandango as we break.

Keylock in for Fandango as we return. Right hands from Kingston break the hold. Sunset flip fails from Kingston as Fandango drops the knee into the left arm twice for a brief nearfall.

Fandango again working the keylock after some striking offense. Kingston out and using some leg kicks in the corner. Mule kick counter sends away a charging Fandango, but Kingston runs right into a wheel kick from Fandango for a nearfall.

Hammerlock variation into a Northern Lights suplex earns a quick nearfall for Fandango. Keylock once again contorting the arm of Kingston. Kingston inches to his feet and gets out with a jawbreaker. A cornered Kingston ducks away from a Fandango splash. Clothesline combination leads to a dropkick for Kingston, converting the Boom Drop soon after. Kingston looking for Trouble in Paradise and Summer Rae hooking the leg of Kingston right in front of the referee.

Winner by disqualification: Kofi Kingston
