Smackdown!: Del Rio's pick for SummerSlam overruled
By DALE PLUMMER -- SLAM! Wrestling

With the calendar turning over to August that can only mean one thing in WWE, SummerSlam is fast approaching. With only 2 weeks until wrestling's Summer Classic the push is in full swing from Houston, Texas. Alberto Del Rio will help fill out the card by choosing his SummerSlam opponent tonight. I'm sure there won't be any shenanigans.

Michael Cole calls the action as always, but tonight he is joined by Alex Riley. I'm guessing JBL is off climbing a mountain or buying stocks or something.

The World Heavyweight Champion doesn't waste any time heading to the ring to announce his opponent for SummerSlam. Del Rio thanks the crowd for nothing, since they didn't support his first title run. The champ does thank GM Vickie Guerrero for letting him pick his opponent. Del Rio mentions Brock Lesnar, but he's all ready has plans. Del Rio says he is going to give this person their first title shot. Del Rio calls for drum roll and reveals Ricardo Rodriguez as his opponent.

New Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero is not amused and confronts Del Rio. She feels disrespected and dresses Del Rio down. The champ offers to pick another opponent and wants the Brooklyn Brawler. Vickie isn't pleased, but she was ready for this. Guerrero tells Del Rio he will face the winner of a Triple Threat match featuring RVD, Christian and Randy Orton.

Match #1 - Cody Rhodes vs. Jack Swagger w/ Zeb Colter

Call it a hunch, but I have a feeling Damien Sandow will be sticking his nose into this match. Before the match, Colter spews his rhetoric, but Cody shuts him up by attacking Swagger. Swagger blocks a Disaster Kick and follows with a Swagger Bomb. Rhodes kicks out of the pin. Cody counters a gut wrench slam with a modified sunset flip and then rolls though to pin Swagger.

Winner via pinfall: Cody Rhodes

I guess I was wrong about Sandow, but Cody does give an interview after the match. Rhodes was fed up with Sandow's arrogance, which is why he turned on him. Sandow jumps Rhodes during the interview, slamming him into crates backstage until officials can break it up.

Match #2 Sin Cara vs. Big E Langston

Sin Cara knocks E down with a drop kick as Ziggler watches from the back. Langston grounds Cara with big boot and then locks in an abominable stretch. Big E is forced to release the hold. Sin Cara goes for a moonsault, but Langston catches him and takes him out with the over the shoulder cutter. Langston covers and get the win.

Winner via pinfall: Big E Langston

Renee Young asks Kaitlyn, with Layla, what her strategy is tonight when she faces AJ for the Divas Title. Kaitlyn says she won't let AJ get in her head anymore. Layla then gives Kaitlyn a big vote of confidence and the two hug it out.

Del Rio is not happy with Vickie, who accuses him of being afraid of competition. Del Rio says this isn't how you treat a champion. Raw GM Brad Maddox drops in and tells Vickie that she is handling this very well. Maddox then reminds Del Rio that he will be his boss on Monday.

Match #3 Fandango w/ Summer Rae vs. CM Punk

Fandango ducks Punk but then walks right into a boot. Punk slams Fandango to the mat. Punks applies a chin lock, but Fandango counters into an arm bar. A back elbow sends Fandango back to the mat. The dancer rolls out of the ring to collect himself and we go to commercial.

After the break, Fandango has Punk in a chin lock. Punk breaks free, shoots off the ropes, but cannot get Fandango over with a sunset flip. Punk beats Fandango in the corner, but then runs into a boot. Fandango misses a knee drop from the turnbuckle. Punk answers with a neck breaker, but only gets a two count on the pin. Punk hits a high running knee in the corner and goes up top. Fandango rolls out to the apron to buy some time. Fandango catches Punk with a kick on the apron and follows with a suplex. Punk kicks out at two. Fandango goes up top again, but Punk is apple to knock him off the ropes. Punk climbs the turnbuckle and delivers a superplex. Punk rolls through and locks in the Anaconda Vice. Fandango quickly taps.

Winner via submission: CM Punk

Renee Young asks RVD how he feels. Van Dam says he feels great, but is interrupted by Christian. Captain Charisma says he deserves one more shot, when Randy Orton chimes in. Orton says he won't take it easy out there just because he has the money in the bank. RVD says this is his interview and he came back to win the gold.

Match #4 Kaitlyn w/ Layla vs. AJ Lee - Divas Championship Match

Big E Langston has been banned from ringside by Vickie Guerrero and Brad Maddox going forward. AJ jumps on Kaitlyn and starts pulling her hair. Kaitlyn drives AJ into the corner and then slams her to the mat. AJ take Kaitlyn to the mat with a sleeper hold. AJ follows with a spinning kick, but then runs into a drop kick. AJ rolls out of the ring and Layla stops Kaitlyn from assaulting AJ at the barrier. AJ jumps Kaitlyn, gets her back in the ring and locks in the Black Widow hold. Kaitlyn taps out, as Layla looks on.

Winner via submission: AJ Lee

After the match, Layla skips to the back with AJ.

Match #5 Christian vs. RVD vs. Randy Orton - Number One Contender Triple Threat Match

Before the match, Alberto Del Rio says he will enjoy watching these guys beating on each other.

Christian tosses Orton from the ring, but runs into an elbow from RVD. Orton pulls Van Dam from the ring, but RVD smashes Orton into the ring steps and then drops him on the security barrier. RVD hits a spinning leg drop on Orton, but while celebrating, Christian hits him with a spear. We go to commercial.

After the break, Christian hits a tornado DDT on RVD. Orton jumps Christian with a Thesz press. Christian goes up top, but Orton cuts him off and hits a superplex. RVD takes out Orton and Christian with clotheslines and follows with a series of kicks. RVD flips Christian out of the ring and slams Orton to the mat. RVD follows with a split legged moonsault, but Orton kicks out. Orton catches Christian coming into the ring, but Christian counters the DDT and sends Orton to the floor. RVD takes out Orton and Christian with a dive over the top rope and we got to another break.

After more commercials, Orton and Christian trade near falls with RVD on the outside. Christian goes up top and delivers a flying elbow. Christian looks for the Kill Switch, but breaks it off as RVD leaps off the top rope and catches Orton in the face with a kick. Christian rolls up RVD, who quickly kicks out. RVD kicks Christian in the face and follows with the Five Star Frog splash. RVD covers, but Orton breaks up the pin. Orton pummels RVD in the corner. RVD fights back and goes for Rolling Thunder. Orton catches him with a power slam and sets up the DDT. Orton catches RVD with a drop kick coming over the top rope. RVD hits the floor. Orton plants Christian with a DDT and looks for the RKO. RVD climbs into the ring only to eat an RKO. Christian recovers, blocks the RKO and catches Orton with a back slide pin. Orton can't kick out and Christian picks up the win and is your new Number One Contender for the World Heavyweight Title.

Winner via pinfall: Christian

After the match, Josh Matthews asks Christian how he feels, before he can answer Del Rio jumps Christian and leaves him laying in the middle of the ring.
