Smackdown!: Daniel Bryan continues to hold off The Shield
By DALE PLUMMER -- SLAM! Wrestling
In case you haven't noticed 2013 is turning into Summer of the Goat, and by Goat, I mean Daniel Bryan. He's been getting a major push over the last couple of weeks, even taking out The Shield by himself. Will Bryan's rise to the top continue this week despite his inferiority complex? Micheal Cole and company call the action from Long Island, New York.
Man, the writers of this show are getting lazy. This is the third time in a month that Miz TV has kicked off the show. Miz welcomes Team Hell No and Randy Orton to the set. Bryan cuts Miz off in the midst of his first question to address what happened on Monday Night. Bryan tells Orton he knows he didn't mean to hit him in the face and also makes peace with Kane. Miz points out that last week Bryan took out all three members of The Shield, but wants to know if he feels he gets the respect that he deserves. Kane tells Bryan that everyone respects him. What does it say that Kane is the voice of reason in this? Kane realizes that Miz is trying to set Bryan up and tries to get him to leave. Bryan doesn't want to go and tells Kane that he doesn't trust him. Kane is fed up with Bryan's attitude and takes off.
Miz thinks he may have seen the break-up of Team Hell No, when Teddy Long walks out on stage. Long is going give Bryan a chance to prove himself against Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins with Randy Orton as his partner.
Match #1 - Chris Jericho vs. Curtis Axel w/ Paul Heyman
On their way to the ring, Heyman hypes his guy; pointing out he has wins over Triple H and John Cena. Axel takes Jericho down with a shoulder block, but Jericho fights back with a forearm shot and then chops to the chest. Jericho clotheslines Axel to the outside and then drop kicks him through the ropes. Jericho gets a boot to the head re-entering the ring and Axel drops him with a neck breaker. We then go to commercial.
After the break, Axel has Jericho in a chin lock. Y2J fight out with a snap mare and follows with a double axe handle off the top rope. Axel blocks an attempt at the Walls of Jericho and then rolls away from the Lionsault. Axel takes advantage; hitting a running neck breaker. Jericho dodges a splash in the corner; answering with a flying cross body off the top rope. Axel kicks of the pin. Jericho counters the Perfect-plex into the Walls of Jericho. Axel is able to crawl to the ropes to break the hold. A running drop kicks sends Axel flying off the table, as Heyman calls for "Clobbering Time!" CM Punks music hits and Jericho is ready. It was all a ruse, though, as Axel is able to roll up a distracted Jericho to get the pin.
Winner via pinfall: Curtis Axel
Long after the bell, Jericho runs back to the ring and takes out a celebrating Axel with a Code Breaker.
Backstage, Kane and Ryback exchange words. Kane sticks up for his partner and wants a piece of Ryback.
Match #2 – Alberto Del Rio w/ Ricardo Rodriguez vs. Heath Slater w/ Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal
3MB jump Del Rio before bell, but Del Rio and Rodriguez are able to fight them off. Del Rio gets Slater in the cross arm breaker, but the match hasn't even started. Rodriguez jumps on McIntyre as Del Rio takes out Mahal. Ricardo climbs the turnbuckle and hits 3MB with cross body. They don't have a long time to celebrate as Dolph Ziggler appears on the Titantron. He tells the world that he is medically cleared to compete this Monday on RAW.
Match #3 – Kane vs. Ryback
Is Ryback a paramedic in his time off, now? Does he drive that ambulance during the week?
Ryback taunts Kane, who responds with an uppercut. Ryback presses Kane over his head, before dropping him to the mat. Ryback fights out a choke slam, but can't avoid the sidewalk slam. Kane catches Ryback with a DDT, sending Ryback rolling to the floor. Ryback slams Kane's head repeatedly into the security barrier and then grabs a table. Kane misses a clothesline off the top rope and Ryback catches him with a spinebuster. Kane counters the Meat Hook with a choke slam, but can't get the pin. Kane sets up the table in the ring. Ryback rakes Kane's eyes and powerbombs him through the table; earning a disqualification.
Winner via DQ: Kane
Damien Sandow is looking for his intellectual equal, but they do not exist. Sandow runs down the crowd before he brings out his equal, a super computer. It's supposed to be Deep Blue, the super computer that beat a chess master. Sandow is going to beat the computer, which talks by the way, at chess. Sheamus interrupts after one move and tells Sandow he can beat the computer in one move. I bet that one move is a Brogue Kick, and I was correct. Sheamus destroys the computer with one kick. Sandow decks Sheamus and drives him face first into a table.
Orton wants Bryan to put aside his personal problems tonight. Bryan says the only problem he has is with The Shield and Orton better stay out of his way.
The Wyatt family is weird.
Match #4 – Fandango w/ Summer Rae vs. Zack Ryder
The Miz joins the announce table to scout Fandango. Ruder connects with a flying drop kick and then the Broski Boot. Fandango kicks out at two. Ryder is caught going high risk. Fandango hits the leg drop off the top rope and gets the pin.
Winner via pinfall: Fandango
Natalya runs in Kaitlyn backstage. Kaitlyn says she is going to meet her secret admirer on Monday Night RAW. Natalya tries to warn her friend, but Kaitlyn wants none of it.
Match #5 – Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins vs. Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton
Bryan goes to work on Rollins with a series of kicks and then locks in a surfboard. Bryan refuses to tag Orton and hits Rollins with an arm breaker. Rollins breaks free only to run into a drop kick. Reigns gets the tag, as Bryan is trapped in the corner. The tag team champs double team Bryan and Reigns apply a head lock. Bryan drops Reigns into corner with a toe hold and is able to tag in Orton. The Viper cleans house, dropping Rollins with the elevated DDT. Orton looks for the RKO when Reigns pulls his partner from the ring and we go to break.
After the commercials, Reigns and Rollins have Orton in a bad way. Reigns covers and Orton kicks out. The Viper pulls off a back suplex, but cannot get the tag as Rollins cuts him off. Reigns whips Rollins into boot from Orton and Bryan is able to get the tag. Bryan connects with a dual missile drop kick to Rollins and Reigns. Bryan hits a release suplex on Rollins and follows with a suicide dive that takes out both men. Back in the ring, Bryan connects with a flying head butt, but Reigns breaks up the pin. Orton knocks Reigns out of the ring, but is then accidently hit by Bryan. Rollins gets caught in the LeBell lock, but Dean Ambrose hits the ring and pummels Bryan. The ref calls for the bell. Bryan fights off The Shield by himself, only to walk into an RKO from Orton.
Winner via DQ: Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton
