WWE Main Event: Battle royal determines Intercontinental contender

After a series of matches with The Miz, Wade Barrett surrendered his WWE Intercontinental Championship to his rival at Wrestlemania. Fortunately, Barrett used his rematch clause the next night to get the strap back. Tonight on WWE Main Event, a battle royal is in order to determine who takes on Barrett for the gold later in the night. All that and more on this week's edition of WWE Main Event!

We are on tape from Knoxville, Tenn. Michael Cole and John Bradshaw Layfield have the call for this week.

Prior to the match, Wade Barrett comes out to address the crowd. He is upset at the treatment he is getting, but The Great Khali's music hits and Natalya and Hornswoggle come out dancing. The Great Khali and Barrett stare down as Khali makes his way to the ring.

Match One: Contenders' Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal

In the ring, we have The Great Khali, The Usos, Primo & Epico, Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal of the 3MB, Alex Riley, Justin Gabriel, Yoshi Tatsu, and Santino Marella.

The melee ensues, with Santino Marella notably walking around and avoiding confrontation with anyone. The brawling among all the wrestlers in-ring now hitting the pace where some are in danger, either being knocked down or near elimination.

The Great Khali delivers his signature chops to Santino Marella, then Jinder Mahal, and finally Alex Riley. Drew McIntyre scores the first elimination by tossing out Jimmy Uso.

Yoshi Tatsu is eliminated by Primo. Justin Gabriel and Santino Marella in a precarious predicament, but both survive. The Great Khali is getting ganged up on, but he starts cleaning house. Chops to Santino Marella and Epico. Epico easily sent out by Khali, and Jinder Mahal is soon to follow as we enter a break.

We return with The Great Khali, Alex Riley, Drew McIntyre, Primo, Justin Gabriel, Jey Uso, and Santino Marella remaining. The entire group tries to eliminate The Great Khali, but he manages to hang on. Alex Riley almost sent out by Santino Marella. The group again focuses on The Great Khali, finally getting him over and out.

Jey Uso eats a monster spinebuster from Alex Riley. Uso sent to the apron, but he hangs on and pops Riley. Riley counters with a dropkick as soon as Jey Uso enters to send him packing.

Riley almost sent out by Drew McIntyre. He hangs on to the apron, but McIntyre comes up to try and push him off. Riley fighting back with shots from the apron, landing a hangman's neckbreaker on McIntyre. Unfortunately, Primo plants him on the floor with a dropkick to end his night.

Down to the final four of Marella, Gabriel, McIntyre, and Primo. Santino Marella wants to go after McIntyre, but Primo and the 3MB member put him down. The two focus on putting Gabriel on the mat. Primo attempts to go after Marella, but he gets hip tossed. McIntyre gets the same treatment. Primo eats a Cobra, but he falls through the second rope. McIntyre tosses Marella out.

Primo on the outside, while McIntyre levels Gabriel with a lariat inside. McIntyre tries to send Gabriel packing, but he skins the cat. Headscissors from Gabriel takes McIntyre out.

Gabriel prematurely celebrating, but turns just in time to land a back bodydrop that sends Primo outside on his own momentum.

Winner: Justin Gabriel

Matt Striker joins Justin Gabriel in the ring. Gabriel says that he is ready for his match, regardless of the prior friendship between Barrett and himself. He is ready to take the belt away.

Michael Cole and JBL set up a video package about the saga between WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger, and Alberto Del Rio that will culminate at Extreme Rules in a Triple Threat match.

Video package shown about CM Punk and his loss for words from Monday night. Paul Heyman has issued a statement, deflecting the attention away from CM Punk and his current state to focus on another client.

This segues into a video package about Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman throwing down the gauntlet for Triple H, challenging him to a steel cage match at Extreme Rules.

Matt Striker with Wade Barrett backstage, questioning if his luck has run out. Barrett scoffs at Striker, taking shots at the "mediocre teacher" who turned into a "mediocre interviewer." Barrett says that the Barrett Barrage will claim Justin Gabriel tonight.

Match Two for the WWE Intercontinental Championship: Wade Barrett (c) vs. Justin Gabriel

Gabriel with a side headlock, but Barrett throws him into the ropes for a shoulder block. Barrett attempts a hip toss, but Gabriel lands on his feet. Sweep of the leg and a rollup earn Gabriel the first nearfall of the contest.

Barrett with a shot to the torso, following up with more strikes and an elbow drop for a nearfall. Gabriel sent off the ropes, but he counters with a spinning back kick. Snapmare into a kick to the back, followed by a crucifix pin attempt for a Gabriel nearfall. Barrett moves to the outside to regroup.

Barrett moves back inside and starts using power striking to ground the smaller man. Stomps in the corner. Swinging neckbreaker from Barrett grabs a nearfall. Barrett choking Gabriel on the second rope, then tangling him between the second and top ropes. Barrett charges, only to eat a boot. Gabriel sends Barrett outside and tries a flying attack, but Barrett ducks away to land a running lariat as we break.

We return with both men exchanging strikes. Barrett wins it with a side kick to the stomach, followed up by a pumphandle slam for a nearfall. Barrett places Gabriel belly-down on the corner, following up with a leg strike to the torso.for a nearfall. Another nearfall for Barrett off a snap suplex.

Barrett locking in a sleeper, but Gabriel fights out. Gabriel off the ropes, but he ends up receiving a knee lift to the stomach. Gabriel tangled in between the top and second rope, allowing Barrett to tie-up and land knees. Big boot sends Gabriel tumbling to the floor.

Gabriel gets in with just a few seconds remaining on the referee's count. Barrett with knees, then pulling Gabriel into a clothesline for a nearfall. Surfboard stretcher tearing the pectorals apart, but Gabriel up to his feet with body shots. Gabriel cornered, but he hits a drop toehold that gets Barrett up-close and personal with the turnbuckles. Gabriel turns the tide with a few kicks. Gabriel using speed, but Barrett catches him to send him flying up and crashing down for a nearfall.

Barrett looking for Wasteland, but Gabriel elbows out. Gabriel gets his boots up in the corner as Barrett charges. Springboard crossbody earns Gabriel a close nearfall. Gabriel heading to the top rope, but Barrett ducks under the move to hit Winds of Change for a very close nearfall.

Barrett very frustrated, unloading some stomps. Pumphandle slam is countered out of by Gabriel, landing a deathdrop. Beautiful springboard moonsault from Gabriel converts for yet another nearfall.

Barrett is cornered and Gabriel charges. Barrett ducks out, but Gabriel with catlike quickness to hop into the corner. Side kick to the kisser of Barrett. 450 Splash is eminent, but Barrett scoots out to the apron. Gabriel stomping his feet in frustration. He ties up Barrett on the apron, but as the referee tries for the clean break, Barrett raking the eyes. Gabriel blinded and Barrett nails the Bull Hammer from the apron.

Winner by pinfall and still WWE Intercontinental Champion: Wade Barrett
