Impact: Storm fights off Aces & Eights speculation
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Impact Wrestling: The Bound For Glory Series rolls on with two more matches as Robbie E takes on Bully Ray and then, in the main event, with speculation running wild that he's behind Aces & Eights, James Storm takes on Kurt Angle. Will the renegade group show up and ruin the match? Should be a good one!
Tonight's show emanates LIVE! from the Impact Zone in Orlando. "The Professor" Mike Tenay and The Tazz are our hosts.
A cold open to the show and Austin Aries and Kenny King are brawling with Bobby Roode and Zema Ion, which leads to…
Match #1 - Austin Aries (Minneapolis, Minn.) & Kenny King (Las Vegas, Nev.) vs. Bobby Roode (Toronto, Ontario) & Zema Ion (The Philippines)
Aries and King in control of Ion early off the brawl. This is all Aries and King and then Roode gets himself involved, pulling King to the outside and running him into the ring apron. Ion follows with a big flip dive onto King. Back in the ring, Ion tags Roode in and he goes to work on King.
We're back and Roode and Ion are still in control on King. King, though, tries to rally and launches Ion with a high-cradle suplex. King inching toward the corner and makes the tag to Aries, but Roode had taken the referee while King made the tag, this it was nullified. Roode and Ion drag King back to their corner and go back to work.
Aries gets himself right back involved, hitting Roode with a missile dropkick, sending Roode to the outside. Aries wants the suicide dive but Ion cuts him off briefly, only to be clotheslined by Aries, who immediately transitions into hitting the ropes and hitting the suicide dive on Roode. King takes the opening left by Aries and hits Ion with the Royal Flush and that is all she wrote.
Winners via pinfall: Kenny King & Austin Aries
The interim GM is here. Sting makes his way to the ring. He calls out James Storm because he wants some answers on whether Storm's involved with Aces & Eights or not. Sting says he has some compelling footage to ask Storm about. He shows Aces & Eights beating on AJ Styles last week but not Storm, then them completely leaving the ring when Storm tried making the save when he came out at the end of show. Sting wants Storm to convince him he isn't part of the group.
Storm notes he's never had to have anyone fight his battles for him and that still isn't the case. Storm notes nine months ago, he was jumped from behind by none other than Kurt Angle. And did he moan and cry about it? No, he dusted himself off and asked for seconds. He notes he then beat Angle three times and didn't need a soul to help him do it.
This brings Angle out. He notes that when he and Storm were supposed to have a Bound For Glory Series match a few weeks ago, Aces & Eights attacked him backstage. They end up setting up a match with each other with Sting at ringside and Angle promises to make Storm tap out.
Match #2 - Bound For Glory Series - Bully Ray (New York City) vs. Robbie E (Seaside Heights, NJ)
Robbie T attacks Ray before the bell, allowing Robbie E to get a quick edge, but he gloats too much and Ray flattens him with a chop. And another. He follows with a cutter and that's it.
Winner via pinfall (7 points): Bully Ray
Backstage, Earl Hebner is giving Madison Rayne flowers, candy and a teddy bear. Rayne says she doesn't need gifts, just his affection. Gail Kim comes up questioning things and Hebner takes off. Rayne says Hebner would never screw anyone in a match, period. That's a good one. She says he's going to call the four-way match coming up right down the middle.
Match #3 - Four-Way Match - Mickie James (Richmond, Va.) vs. Madison Rayne (Seattle, Wash.) vs. Tara (Louisville, Ky.) vs. Gail Kim (Toronto, Ontario)
Rayne and Kim team up in the early going. James pulls Kim to the outside and they go at it. Kim throws James into the steps and in the ring, Tara hits a slam but Kim breaks up the pin. Rayne and Kim go back to work on Tara. Kim, though, misses the running corner crossbody and Rayne hits Tara with a move that the camera missed, but James breaks it up and she and Rayne go at it. James hits Rayne with a neckbreaker but Kim breaks it up.
Tara snaps Kim's neck on the rope and hits a slingshot leg drop for two. Tara goes to the top but she is crotched by Rayne. It's all breaking down now. Kim hits Tara with a huge superplex and crawls for the pin, but Rayne distracts Hebner. Kim blows a gasket and James throws her out of the ring. James hits a series of clotheslines and then drops Rayne. James goes to the top but Kim sends her crashing to the floor. Tara recovers and hits Kim with the Widow's Peak but Rayne grabs her. Then exchange in some reversals and Tara with a roll-up combination. He shoulder is up, Rayne's are down, Hebner counts three and declares Rayne the winner.
Winner via pinfall: Madison Rayne
Match #4 - Kid Kash (Nashville, Tenn.) vs. Chavo Guerrero (El Paso, Texas)
Guerrero in control early but Kash takes over and goes to work in this battle of veterans of the business. Kash wants a moonsault but Guerrero gets his knees up. Kash with an eye poke to try to stop Guerrero's rally, but Guerrero fights through it. Drop kick connects for two for Guerrero. Guerrero sling shots his way in onto Kash.
Gunner provides a distraction and allows Kash to get a big punch and kick in, but Guerrero hits the Three Amigos and goes to the top and hits the Frog Splash and that does it.
Winner via pinfall: Chavo Guerrero
Kurt Angle is backstage and meeting with Wes Brisco, the son of Gerald Brisco. He asks Angle to put a word into Hulk Hogan for him. Garett Bischoff and Devon come up and Devon talks to Angle about he and Bischoff providing support for Angle. Angle wants them to promise him those idiots won't get involved in his match tonight. They agree.
Christopher Daniels and Kazarian are out to have a baby shower for Claire Lynch since AJ Styles has dropped the ball on it, just like he always does. So since Styles and his redneck family aren't going to step up, they will. They start opening gifts and the first one is diapers. Daniels is going over the top to note they are there to support her. She opens one and it's a bunch of TNA merch. The next one is a baby doll with a mini Styles jacket on. Kazarian does Styles' mannerisms on the doll.
Lynch says she knows Styles is watching from Australia and he needs to do the right thing.
Joseph Park is backstage and notes his law firm has been retained by some TNA talent. Then he has a rather interesting exchange with Sting. Sting says he saw Park's match a few weeks back and that Black Hole Slam was textbook. Park asks for a picture with Sting. This was funny.
Match #5 - Bound For Glory Series - James Storm (Leiper's Fork, Tenn.) vs. Kurt Angle (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
Angle gets the better of it but Storm is holding him off as some wrestlers come to the ring to watch out for Aces & Eights. Storm rolls through the ankle lock, sending Angle into the second turnbuckle and hits Angle with an Angle Slam for two. Angle counter Storm into the ankle lock again. Angle has him and Storm can't escape, but he's hanging on for a really long time. Storm finally rolls to his back and kicks Angle in the head and hits him with a Last Call Superkick and gets the pin.
Winner via pinfall (7 points): James Storm
Storm gets the mic and challenges Aces & Eights to come out since the gang's all there. Bobby Roode gets a mic and says this is a little odd that there's no Aces & Eights. He says Storm beat Angle all by himself, so that's why Aces & Eights aren't here. He rants further as the show goes off the air.
