Smackdown: Youngsters impressive as Extreme Rules nears
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on WWE Friday Night Smackdown: The show is undergoing a bit of a youth movement as we just days away from Extreme Rules. Antonio Cesaro makes his in-ring debut, Titus O'Neil and Darren Young are in tag team action and the powerhouse Ryback is, well, a powerhouse again. In the main event, Sheamus faces Mark Henry. Should be a good one!
And we are TAPED! from Grand Rapids, Mich. Michael Cole and Booker T are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG, V)
Daniel Bryan is out to start the show. He talks about how he finally got rid of AJ, but there's still something that's bothering him, so he wanted to come out here and set the record straight. He says his 18 second loss at WrestleMania does not count. If anything, it should go on AJ's record, not his, because she lost the match, not him. He says Sheamus can't legitimately beat him once, let once in two-of-three falls.
He says he was an impartial referee Monday on Raw in the match between Sheamus and Mark Henry. He shows us some footage and of course, the quick count is brought to us in slow motion. He says he will regain the World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules. As he starts saying "Yes!" he is interrupted by Alberto Del Rio.
Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez go into a monologue with Del Rio asking questions and Rodriguez responding, "Si!" The fun is ended by The Big Show, who is here for some reason. Bryan and Del Rio bail, leaving Rodriguez alone with Show. He gets a choke slam for his troubles.
Match #1 - The Big Show (Tampa, Fla.) vs. Alberto Del Rio (San Luis Potosi, Mexico)
This one doesn't do long before Cody Rhodes jumps into the match and that ends it.
Winner via disqualification: The Big Show
Rhodes grabs a kendo stick and a chair from under the ring and drills Show with the stick, but Show no sells it. Rhodes grabs the chair and Show knocks it outs of his hand. Rhodes takes his belt off and tries that but Show takes it, rips Rhodes' shirt off and then whips him with his own belt.
Match #2 - Nikki Bella (Scottsdale, Ariz.) vs. Alicia Fox (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.)
We quickly get some Twin Magic and Brie hits the X Factor and that does it.
Winner via pinfall: Nikki Bella
Match #3 - Yoshi Tatsu (Tokyo, Japan) & Ezekiel Jackson (Guyana, South America) vs. Titus O'Neil (Tampa, Fla.) & Darren Young (Miami, Fla.)
Young and O'Neil all over Tatsu. Young kicks Jackson off the apron and then O'Neil loads Tatsu up in the power bomb position and Young comes off the top with a clothesline and that is it. No chance.
Winners via pinfall: Titus O'Neil & Darren Young
Michael Cole is in the ring for an interview with Randy Orton. Orton is angry Kane messed with his family and he won't accept it. He says Kane isn't ready for the hell he'll unleash Sunday.
Then he's interrupted by, of all people, Jinder Mahal. He still works here? He says he's better, richer, hungrier than Orton. He says he'll be waiting for him on the other side of Extreme Rules. Orton gives him an RKO. Cool.
Match #4 - Tyson Kidd (Calgary, Alberta) vs. Antonio Cesaro (Lucerne, Switzerland)
This is all Cesaro. Gut-wrench suplex connects. Kidd tries to start some offense, but Cesaro launches Kidd into the air and catches him with the Very European uppercut coming down. He puts him away with his modified Styles Clash. Good night.
Winner via pinfall: Antonio Cesaro
Match #5 - The Great Khali (India) vs. Cody Rhodes (Marietta, Ga.)
Rhodes with a drop kick that gets Khali off his feet, but the big man kicks out. Rhodes back to work on that bad leg. Khali is able to knock Rhodes down. Rhodes escapes his clutches and hits the middle rope for the Beautiful Disaster kick, but Khali catches him by the throat and hits the Punjabi Plunge and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: The Great Khali
Match #6 - Jacob Kaye (Grand Rapids, Mich.) vs. Ryback (Sin City)
Poor boy gets killed dead. Buh bye.
Winner via pinfall: Ryback
Match #7 - Sheamus (Dublin, Ireland) vs. Mark Henry (Silsbee, Texas)
Sheamus trying to knock Henry down and finally gets him down with a third ax-handle smash, this one jumping after coming off the ropes. DDT connects for Sheamus. Sheamus goes for the Brogue Kick but Henry sidesteps and smacks Sheamus down, "like he was a cruiserweight," Booker T says. Henry charges into the corner but Sheamus gets his foot up. Sheamus goes to the top, looking for something, but Henry moves. Sheamus is able to roll through, get to his feet and catch Henry turning around with the Brogue Kick and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Sheamus
