WWE NXT: Striker says 'no mas,' brings in Regal to run show for day
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on WWE NXT: After getting punched last week, show host Matt Striker is tapping out this week. The former teacher is taking a day off, so he's bringing in a substitute in the form of former Raw general manager William Regal, who books quite an interesting show. Should be a good one!
And we are TAPED! from Fresno, Calif. Josh Mathews and William Regal are our commentators and Matt Striker is our host. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks are out to start the show. They note how they deserve much better than begging for matches on NXT. Reks says they seize opportunities. Hawkins says Striker is the problem on this show. He couldn't cut it as a wrestler, or an announcer. This show doesn't need a host. It needs someone who's bold, brave and not afraid to make a decision. He says this show needs change.
This brings Striker out. He says he's done everything he can to give everyone a chance to shine. Striker buries Hawkins for not hitting that hard. Striker says he gave someone a call and is bringing in a substitute. Striker walks to the back and Regal grabs a mic at the announce desk and says tonight, he's in charge of NXT and they are going to make some interesting matches. Right now, Hawkins will face Tyson Kidd with Reks banned from ringside.
Match #1 - Curt Hawkins (Queens, NY) vs. Tyson Kidd (Calgary, Alberta)
Hawkins takes control after slamming Kidd on the apron, but Kidd starts to fire up with a back elbow and two kicks. Hawkins slides to the outside, but Kidd heads to the apron and kicks the charging Hawkins smack in the face. He throws Hawkins back in the ring and hits the springboard elbow but Hawkins kicks out at two.
Kidd goes for the Sharpshooter but Hawkins kicks him off. A series of reversals later and Hawkins hits an implant DDT for two. Hawkins with a throw but Kidd gets his foot on the bottom rope. Hawkins loads Kidd up on the top rope and goes for a suplerplex but Kidd punches his way out and dumps Hawkins to the canvas. He follows that up with a rollthrough and applies the Sharpshooter. Hawkins quickly taps.
Winner via pinfall: Tyson Kidd
This appears to be a face turn for Kidd if you're scoring at home.
Match #2 - Titus O'Neil (Tampa, Fla.) vs. Yoshi Tatsu (Tokyo, Japan)
O'Neil employing his rather large size advantage against Tatsu here. He whips Tatsu into the corner and charges, but Tatsu moves. Tatsu lights O'Neil up with chops and kicks. He hits a running knee and another kick for two. Tatsu goes to float over but O'Neil sidesteps him and kicks him. He follows with the Clash of the Titus and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Titus O'Neil
O'Neil grabs the mic and screams at Regal for some competition. He calls out Alex Riley and well, here comes A-Ry. He has a spectacular fake tan. He walks to the ring and says he doesn't talk about, he is about it, so if O'Neil wants to fight, let's drop the mic and fight. O'Neil ducks out of the ring, noting he already had a match tonight and he has a Valentine's date.
Match #3 - Percy Watson (Miami, Fla.) vs. Michael McGillicutty (Minneapolis, Minn.)
McGillicutty charges Watson in the corner but Watson moves and catches the rebounding McGillicutty with the flapjack and that does it.
Winner via pinfall: Percy Watson
Match #4 - Derrick Bateman (Cleveland, Ohio) & Justin Gabriel (Cape Town, South Africa) vs. Heath Slater (Pineville, WV) & Johnny Curtis (Westbrook, Maine)
Slater and Curtis in control, keeping Gabriel isolated and in their corner, using frequent tags in and out to keep the heat on the Cape Town native. Gabriel, though, fires up and brings in Bateman, who comes in on fire against Slater. Clotheslines galore. Bateman plants Slater with the Sweet Meat Sizzler and that's it. Impressive for Bateman.
Winners via pinfall: Derrick Bateman & Justin Gabriel
